This Tuesday is our monthly camera club meeting and competion. The club description is: Nocturnal – A picture depicting a person(s), animal(s), or thing(s) either in, of, done by, or active in the night. (After Sunset – Dusk OK)
I am stumped. Any ideas for subject? I am hoping to maybe recruit my son and his friends to be part of the subject and maybe make a bonfire or something. Not sure how to pull that off or if that would even make an intersting shot or not!
Go to Bowse, select By Tag, and look at "Night" pictures. Also go to Flickr.com and search for night or nocturnal pictures. That's a great way to see what other people do and get ideas. Tonight is supposed to be a "super moon," so there's a good subject there, as well as things the moon might light up. The moon reflecting on water is a possibility. Things around your house that light up...cable box, TV, night lights, etc. Locations in your neighborhood that have lights/signs...businesses, bars, etc.
What age is your son? I bet he and his friends would have lots of ideas of fun things to do in the dark, that you could then shoot! I love @nikkers idea about dressing up and heading for the cemetary, or they could play with torches, or glow sticks or toy light sabres, as in Star Wars! A lot depends on their age and what they will find fun, as this will show in the photos!
@frameit I understand teenagers being out at night, but why do they bring angle grinders? @sharritta Sharon, I've tried getting people around fire etc. and it's tricky if they're moving. I'd either suggest a long exposure to get the background and flash to freeze the people, or else have the people standing still as in Tracy's shot above. I sat still in a shot for 5 minutes last night :)
@pizzaboy Not angle grinders but whisks full of steel wool that we then set alight before spinning them around on dog leashes... and why? Because their mother wanted them to!!! :)
I know it's not the right time of year for it, Halloween would be better, but when you mentioned your teens helping out I immediately thought of vampires. Or, it could be because Dark Shadows, the movie, opens next weekend. LOL. Anyway, vampires was the first thing that hit me. Funny.
Swans sleeping on the river at night makes for an interesting shot, otherwise a long exposure of an illuminated building with people walking past? Light trails from a high vantage point of a roundabout or busy junction? I really want to get a long exposure of a police car or ambulance so you get a blue ladder effect.
