Trying out GIMP 2.8

May 8th, 2012
Not sure how many here use The GIMP for their processing, but I really like it and you can't argue with the price :)

GIMP 2.8 was finally released a couple of days ago and a Windows build is now available. I installed it tonight - loving the new single-window option for the interface!

For anyone interested, it's freely available at gimp.org

If anyone would like to buy my Gimp book that I got last summer, complete with CD's and stuff, let me know. In OCtober I got an IMAC, and GIMP doesn't run on the Lion OS.

It's the previous version of GIMP, but I would think that the book would still be helpful. I don't like learnign from videos, and that's why I got the book.

I've got the old GIMP and it is wonderful. Shall have to download the new one :)

I LOVE Gimp :)

@ozziehoffy The older version doesn't. There is a programme that works both independently and as a plug-in that does, called UFRaw.

I'm still on 2.6, having used a few of the previous releases. It's the only game in town for Linux users (weren't there rumours a while ago of Google sponsoring a port of Photoshop for Unix based systems though? I digress). Anyway, GIMP has a reputation for user hostility which used to be richly deserved, but it's much improved nowadays, and if there's a single window option in 2.8 that should smooth the way for anyone migrating from other programs.

@Cassandra Hoffman: yes, you can convert RAW -> jpeg using the UFRaw plugin, and that works with Windows too apparently.

@automaticslim @wormentude @ozziehoffy There's also Raw Therapee which I much prefer to ufRaw. RawTherapee can be configured to integrate with the GIMP.

@veg66 GIMP tends to be a little harder to use than Photoshop but one gets used to it. It was previously only capable of editing in 8 bit colour but that is changing - current version is partially capable of higher bit depths, next one will be fully. It doesn't have adjustment layers yet, but at least this version has layer grouping.

@automaticslim in the Linux world, DarkTable is getting a very good reputation for raw conversion I believe?

I have gimp, which I. Never knew I had... Must be one of my daughters additions.. It scares me :) think I will play with it today though. Perhaps I should look at the new version before fiddling with the old. Thanks for the heads up Mick.

@pizzaboy I think my raw program integrates with gimp... After I save the processed raw file Gimp automatically comes up. I totally destroyed one of my moon shots in gimp not knowing what I was doing.
May 8th, 2012
@sugarmuser Definitely use the new one. Then go into the Windows menu and select single window mode. Much more normal user experience!
May 8th, 2012
@pizzaboy Thanks Mick... I was lost in the old gimp...
May 8th, 2012
@sugarmuser The new gimp won't save over your old jpeg. It just saves the gimp project file and you have to export to save the JPEG. Much better.

You still have your RAW file though - it doesn't get modified in the processing.

@pizzaboy I still have the raw file... But had to start all over again :) the new program sounds much better already.

can you upgrade a previous version to 2.8? would hate to lose all my current plug ins/brushes...and god I wish I had the money to buy your book @5unflow3r lol
May 9th, 2012
@loztsoul Yes, it installs straight over 2.6.
May 9th, 2012
@pizzaboy awesome...I love gimp :)
May 9th, 2012
@veg66 I thought it was difficult to learn after PS, but it was free, so I was seriously giving it a try , but then, as I mentioned, it dirsn't run on the Mac OS I have now
May 9th, 2012
@pizzaboy. It can't be harder to use than Photoshop...Photoshop CS6 is like going on a road trip with out a map...it's crazy to get use to...the manual is as big as a phone book. :(...or maybe it's my old school ways. :)
