Suggestions: Family Portrait on the Beach

June 3rd, 2012
A coworker has "commissioned" me to take her family's portrait on the beach next weekend. This will be the first time I take pictures for someone else. My biggest concerns are 1) the beach, and 2) the two children under the age of 4. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The beach is the best location ever, make sure your light is correct - go for late afternoon with warm light and children is just magical. Let them lay down on their stomachs. You can do it.

Avoid midday sun.

Avoid having them facing into harsh sunlight or they'll all be squinting. Either find some shade, do the shoot in late afternoon (or early morning), or have their backs to the sun and use some flash to fill in the shadows.

If it takes you some time to get the exposure right, then grab an adult and experiment and get things right before you bring in the kids.

Suggest white clothes...running into the water holding hands or even walking in. Beach is so fun?
Here r some I took last summer of my fam. Lighting was horrible bc we did it in the AM...gotta do it later in the day..but AM just worked for us. Go Dow the blog post and look for us in white. Good luck and have fun!

I think Hamp might be a guy to ask @hamptanner. I know he knows "thing or two" about shooting on the beach :-)

Beach portraits are great because the location is beautiful (my favorite time is during golden hour) and you really cannot go wrong. I agree with all of the suggestions above. I was going to add to get lots of beach portrait taking inspiration check out pinterest.com
