I went back and forth on these two lenses. I bought the 60mm because of the wider aperture. I love it...it's my favorite lens. For portraits, i wouldn't want anything longer. That being said, there are times I've wished I had a longer macro or the V/R. I don't think you'll go wrong with either. I just posted a macro today, but there are several posted in February. You can see the great color you get with the 60mm lens. The build quality is superior.
The 60mm is a prime lens and will work if you ever upgrade to a full frame sensor where the 85mm is good for the crop sensor range of Nikon DSLR's. If it were me and I have thought long and hard about every lens I have bought I would go fo the 60mm everytime as it is far superior including the Nano coated glass. I have the 105mm macro and use it nearly every day for every sort of shot excluding landscape. Hope this helps but if you need any more advice then please just ask. Take a look at some of my macro shots and you will see you get what you pay for.
@andysg Hi Andy, I see you have the 105mm, I was considering this as my next lens, but it is very expensive. Mainly I want it for macro and some nice portraiture, do think that is the way to go?
@newbie Hi Stacey yes it is expensive but it an awesome lens as the clsarity is superb. I only have 1 portrait on here and I used the 105mm for it too but use it for macro most of the time. It was recommended to me by a pro shop when I told them I wanted to do exactly what you said you want to do. It allows you to get in really close for macro and the DOF for portraits is superb. Take a look at the exif info on my shots to see how many are taken with it.
@andysg I love your photos! Where did you buy your 105mm? Id much rather have a expensive lens that take amazing photos then a cheaper one that doesn't take as well as photos.
@jphotos08 Hi Jamie it was from a shop called Calumet. The staff are fantastic and they all shoot so know exactly what you want and you can hire the kit to try before you buy.
@cmc1200@andysg k so i am buying one of these lenses this weekend and still haven't decided which one i am getting. I was wondering why you think the 60mm lens was better than the 85mm?
@jphotos08 Hi Jamie the 60mm is made from better quality glass an dthe overall build quality is better. It will depend on what you want the lens to shoot. Sometimes you just cant get in close enough so the 85mm would give you slighly more reach but if that isn't important buy the better glass in the 60mm.
@jphotos08@andysg What he said. :) i keep the 60 mm on my camera all the time. It's a great length for a walk-around lens. It also is a full-frame lens in case you ever plan to upgrade your camera. Have fun with your new lens!
@andysg@cmc1200 this is lens going to be a good lens for portraits. I have a newborn photo shoot in the next month. I've never done a newborn photo shoot and i want the pictures to turn out really good. As these pictures are very important.
@jphotos08 Hi Jamie that is the macro lens I have and its outstanding. If you look at my flower shots and portraits they are all shot on it and for close ups.its unbeatable and you get what you pay for
Hi Jamie this is not a Macro lens but would be ideal for travel or everyday shooting. I have leaned that an F stop down to 2.8 makes a huge difference in coping with low light situations which the macro lens has.
