Using an iPhone as a remote trigger for your DSLR

June 18th, 2012
I just read about triggertrap https://triggertrap.com/products/triggertrap-mobile/ that makes your iPhone into a remote control for your camera. It sounds good (like all ads do), but does anyone have experience actually working with it? Is there comparable devices for other smart phones (or am I stuck in switching to an iPhone)? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I saw something similar to this on kickstarter. You have to buy the cable and the app comes with it. That project wasn't supposed to be out till this fall. Both this one and the other state that they will support Android. I know that iPhone apps take much longer to approve so once they are finalized for Apple, they go back and whip them up for Android. Most of the bugs are worked out by then.

I have not had any experience however I plan on buying one later this year as I missed out on the kickstarter project when it was going.

Yes....unfortunately the Android apps take a while to backwards engineer from the iPhone apps (at least this is usually the process) so it may be a while. However the website stated they were working on it....and the checks in the mail right?

I use the DSLR Remote app on Android - had to make up an infrared cable for my Sony camera but it's awesome, I use it for heaps of night work to do intervals and HDR etc.

Hmmmm not sold on the idea of this. My $65 RF intervalometer works pretty good and can take 2000 photos in a row without impacting the battery. I will watch this for this...

I have the one that works w the iPhone... I haven't tried all the functionality - just the basics... It worked ok - I did come across some glitches but they may have been user-error ;) Also, the cord that I got isn't that long - so a little suboptimal for selfie... This was a gift and i dont know how much it cost (The cord - the app was free altho i can pay $10 for the fuller version i think), and i Havent priced out all the alternatives but not sure this is the option I wld pick first...

@hjbenson I looked into these for my Galaxy S2 and ended up just buying the $30 AU Yongnuo wireless remote/intervalometer its the best money you will spend. Didn't think leaving both my phone and camera outside for a few hours at night was the best thing in the world while taking star trails images.
Plus this way I can still play Angry Birds :P

@flagged @northy Thanks for the info, there is some time lapsed projects I would like to try and figured the phone might be the way to do it.

@hjbenson The Yongnuo wireless remote will allow you to take time lapse with ease, once you have worked out the movie length and the intervals required you simply set and walk away. Intevals can be set amount of shots required etc. Also helps with long exposures :) bulb lock.
