Nikon D40X white balance

June 28th, 2012
My husband recently purchased a 2nd hand Nikon D40X digital camera and has noticed even in auto white balance, the pictures have a green tint, especially the sky. We did a total reset on the camera but it didn't help. Is this normal? Can anything be done about it in auto mode? It's kind of frustrating. I thought Nikon was a good name in cameras.

I have a Nikon point and shoot and it doesn't have this problem.

Thank you for any input.

When you say "even in auto"..does that mean you have tried it in some of the manual modes and set if for sunlight..incandescent etc it has a green tint also?

@drewhuy My husband did set it to sunlight, went outside and took a picture but it still had a green shift. He then tried setting the white balance manually using a white object to set it, took a picture outside and it did looked a little better.

The concern is the green shift in "auto" white balance. This is the setting he would like to use most.

Try going into the menus - it's possible to manually tweak all the white balance settings, so it's possibly that the last owner tweaked it to green and your husband needs to move the slider back to centre.

@mittens , I hope you get it straightened out. My D50 used to get confused occasionslly in auto. It was rare though.

@wormentude Thank you Rachael. I'm not sure where there would be a slider in the menu but I will have to look. I guess it would be under the white balance selection. I've been in there but don't remember seeing anything like that. My husband and I can look again.
