I am shooting my first wedding this Friday. I was wondering if anyone out there thought I should rent a wide angle lens? I have a 200mm and a 300mm for my Nikon D5000, is that enough? I am not getting paid a lot, but I don't want to miss a shot either. Also, when cropping into an 8 x 10 format do you frame your shot way outside so you don't loose anything important? Ok one more question.... I have never shot a group portrait larger than 10 people...any tips on that??? Thank you so much....any advice is helpful. I know I can do it, but I am soooooo nervous.
@andysg Actually a prime lens has a fixed focal length and refers to lenses such as the 15, 30. 50. 85mm etc. I would "think" you would need something shorter than your 200mm and Andy's suggestion is a good one!
I have several friends that shoot weddings professionally and one guy uses a 24-70mm and 70-200mm which covers everything he needs. The 24-70 will give you the flexibility!
@andysg@kellc@heatherwilsonaz The 24-70 is not what she needs. The d5000 is a crop camera and she will miss out on wide shots with the 24-70 on a crop. You need the 17-55 DX.
At this point if you have not used a wide angle it may not be the best investment. You would have a day to rent and adjust to the lens. They take a bit of getting used to and finding the sweet spot in composition. They all have a bit of distortion on the edges. Also if you do not have a larger flash to attach to your camera, your on camera lens may actually not be able to reach over the size of the lens.
@heatherwilsonaz If you are taking both indoor and outdoor photos hire something like Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED DX, your 200mm for potraits should work in the right situation. @andysg I would think your mate might be using an FX camera in which case yes he's covered. : )
Also 27 mm is not really that wide.
