I know there are others using this breed of camera, and I'm wondering if anyone else has problems with focusing, both automatic and manual, with any macro settings? Is it operator error?
No problems at all, and I have been using it for more than a year. Focusing has always been spot-on, especially in auto mode with the kit lenses. I also use it with M-mount and Nikon-mount lenses with adaptors, and never had any focusing issues in manual focus mode, and one of the lenses that I use with the NEX without any problem is Nikon's 60mm Macro (older version).
If you have problems with focusing the camera may need to be re-calibrated, so my advice is to send to Sony to check. NEXs are wonderful cameras. I have seen many great photos on this site.
Having said that, the thing I don't like most about this camera is the loud shutter sound (NEX5).
I've had my nex-5n for about a month and I love it. I haven't had any focus problems at all, in fact I find all the focus options work really quickly and efficiently. It's such an exciting camera!
I think @viranod is right, that you need to get your's checked out. I know you've had problems with it for a while. Maybe take it to the Sony Centre in the city, they're really helpful there.
