underwater pictures: 4 questions

July 16th, 2012
I have four questions:

1) How many folks here take underwater pictures?

2) What camera (and any other equipment) do you use?

3) Why do you like taking underwater pictures?

4) What is your favorite underwater pic that you've taken?

To get things started, I'll answer my own questions:

1) I have taken underwater pictures since 2003, first on film and now digitally.

2) I use a Canon EOS 30D in an Ikelite underwater housing with 1 Ikelite Sunstrobe-125

3) I like being able to share the wonderful things I see when scuba diving with my family and friends who can't or won't dive.

4) This one:

BTW, I'm not just interested seeing in scuba diving pics. Pool pics, bathtub pics, whatever! are cool, too.

Thanks!

I like it because it's blue.
I did it once in 2012, and shot a roll of film with my friend
erm...I used a film point and shoot in a case, the $6 ones off ebay.
This is my fav - and I don't know if I'll get to take anymore, cos in the UK a bald guy with a camera don't get let into swimming pools much, it scares the parents
Oh, and our seas are cold and dirty

Really want to try this, not sure how much I'd trust a waterproof housing with my brand new dslr. Maybe I'll just get a disposable film one!

@sobefree I was sort of wondering about going the inexpensive route of a disposable waterproof camera, or the low-end digital waterproof P&S that are out there (i.e., under $100). I likely would only be using it to shoot my kids under water at the pool, no more than 5 feet/ 1.5 meters deep, probably with decent sunshine overhead. Anyone have experience on how these two options would compare for this limited purpose?

@rockinrobyn @sobefree

If you aren't going deeper than 1,.5 meters or are doing it as a one time thing, then a disposable film camera will work fine (but you won't know how your pics turned out until they developed).

If you want to try underwater pics and are the sort who goes out in all weathers (rain & storm pics), an underwater digital point & shoot can be a fun and useful investment.

@dancingkatz Thank you! It would be nice to have the option of shooting in the rain without worrying about finding and holding an umbrella! :)

@rockinrobyn - many of the Olympus DSLR and micro DSLR are weather sealed and I have taken mine out in heavy rain with no problems...
