Tripods on United Airlines

July 23rd, 2012
Does anyone know if United Airlines lets you carry on a tripod or do they make you check it in with luggage? Mine is an induro that has a 22 inch carrying case. I already have the camera situation figured out, but if I have to check it in, I might as well go with the slight increase in suitcase size to bring my laptop.

I think it should be fine. I have carried on my tripod on a couple of trips with no problems.

@chriswang cool, now that Continental merged with them, the rules of Continental changed a lot and I cannot keep up.

United Airlines will permit one bag plus one personal item (see below), per customer to be carried on the aircraft.

The maximum combined linear measurement (length + width + height) of carry-on bags must not exceed 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches (114 cm).

In addition to one carry-on item, you may bring one personal item such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or an item of similar size.

The following items are not counted toward your one bag and one personal item limit:

Overcoat or wrap
Umbrella
A reasonable amount of reading material
Pet carrier (fees apply)
A collapsible wheelchair
Child restraint seat meeting FAA approval standards
Camera
Diaper bag
A limited amount of duty-free merchandise or food purchased in the airport
Assistive devices (a cane, one set of crutches, prescription medications and any medical devices needed to administer the medications, a portable oxygen concentrator (POC), etc.)

You never know these days.... I would suggest removing the head and bring it along with your carry-on. Put the tripod in the suit case.

I have always carried my camera in my carry on bag and last time I had a small flex tripod in there but was not able to take it on board. The full size tripod was packed in my luggage because I had been told by the airline when I phoned that's where it had to go. Call the airline and ask them about it or be prepared to hand it over cause by the time they take them off you it's too late to check it with your luggage.

So glad you are starting this thread. In the fall I will be traveling as well and wondered about my camera. I planned on just bringing it in the camera bag along with an additional carry on luggage. I'm assuming that is not considered an additional carry on item based on the above from Amy. I better look at what my own airlines allows though.

This is straight from the TSA website:

Check or Carry-on

You may transport this item in carry-on baggage or in checked baggage. For items you wish to carry-on, you should check with the airline to ensure that the item will fit in the overhead bin or underneath the seat of the airplane.

Please be sure to wrap cords tightly around electronics items and pack your bag in neat layers (layer of clothes, layer of electronics, layer of clothes, layer of shoes, etc.) to help officers get a clear look at your bag.

Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.

In some countries they screen all the baggage before you get to check in area. When returning to Australia, they screened my bag and wanted to inspect before I could check it in. The items of concern where 30 rolls exposed film in an x-ray shielded bag, and a set of traditional Balinese cooking knives (especially the meat cleaver).

....just saying!

@aspada I knew about the camera, but my tripod does not fit subtely in my "handbag" which is more like a stylish giant laptop/purse/gym/overnight bag. So I was hoping I could carry it in its travel case, but I got it into my rollie carryon suitcase.

I tried to find out this information before a trip I took in June. The last sentence in the TSA info above shows it's really up to the individual doing the search. My husband recently had trouble with his breathing device for sleep apnea, that he has taken along as a carry-on for years. They made him check it in. I decided to put the tripod in my luggage, not knowing what I would have to do with it if they wouldn't let me carry it on.
