London Olympics

July 24th, 2012
Hi there. This isn't particularly photographically related, it's more to do with social networking. I'm a primary school teacher in Wellington New Zealand and am working with a class of 9 & 10 year old students who are learning about the Olympics.

What I would like is access to schools in London, or elsewhere (anywhere!) that these kids can communicate with on this topic. Maybe some 365er out there can recommend potentially friendly schools. The idea is for the class to communicate & perhaps even collaborate globally with other like-minded people, just as we do on this site. We are such a far flung set of islands so are taking advantage of the all the technology at our fingertips today to connect with others. It will give them insights into the lives of other students of their age from around the world. It would be amazing to contact schools in different continents.

Maybe there will be photographic spin offs- who knows! Please post here if you can help or email me caroliner@paremata.school.nz. Thanks!

The minor drawback you could have is that most UK schools finished for the Summer holiday at the end of last week (or earlier if they were in Scotland), so could be hard, even if you get hold of some teachers, to get hold of some kids... You *might* find some useful contacts via http://www.flatclassroomproject.org/, in particular you could try contacting Vicki Davis ( http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.co.uk/ ) - she's in the US, thus also on holiday at present - but she's v. active & might well have contacts ... good luck!

I think US schools might go back soon but UK schools are broken up until September, now. x

@emmadw Thanks Emma. I hadn't realised this. @boogie Thanks as well. Enjoy the break!

You have probably had lots of replies, explaining the schools are shut for 6 weeks' summer holidays. I have two grandchildren of the ages you mentioned, who are going to a couple of Olympic events, including tomorrow's women's football match - GB v. New Zealand! Do you want to be put in touch?
best wishes
Chris

Hi Caroline, my wife (Rebecca) is a teacher of 9 and 10 year olds in the UK. They have finished for summer, but she would be delighted to collaborate with you on a project sometime between September and December if that were possible. She has a partner school in France and has worked with schools all over Europe and in India as well. If you are interested, my profile has an email address for me, drop me a line and I will forward to Rebecca for reply. We do have a few Torch Relay pics (see my posts for yesterday later today) and are going to a couple of events next week.

@gooner46 That would be wonderful Chris! My email address is in the first post in this thread. Thank you so much.

@seanoneill Thanks Sean. I'm collaborating on this unit with another teacher only up to September, then I continue with full time university study. When I'm back in the classroom fulltime that would be great. Thanks so much.

Just left you a link on a photo. We had a torch bearer come into school last week. Photo on my 365. Schools are closed but look on school websites. I 'll email you!

@gooner46 I thought the events did not start until this Saturday 28th July as the opening ceremony is Friday 27th July.

@naomi Nope most U.S. Schools are out until the last week of August or the first week of September also.
