Gone in a heartbeat.

This is for new owners and others that don't realize it of some digital camers, Last night I was looking at the menu about format. I hit (set) on it and all 800 plus pictures were instantly gone. With no warning at all. I have thought that if something was going to cause the loss of photos that you would get a warning of some kind, not so. So, I have learned a very good lesson and wanted to pass it on to others so they don't have to learn the hard way. I had downloaded most of the photos, but not all of them. I tell you it was a very strange feeling like a sudden emptyness. Guess I have to find and READ the booklet that came with the camera.

Oh dear! There are recovery programmes available, try searching the net. Good luck.

yes, if you use Windows there's a very good Image Recovery package - I couldn't find anything for Linux, but go find what you can, and don't take any pictures

As ShanneW said, do not write anything else to that card! As long as you don't take any other photos, most of what you lost should be recoverable.

yup you can recover images even off a formatted card with the right software. My camera always gives a warning when I am about to format so haven't done this myself but I know other people that have.

Oh that awful gut wrenching moment... I've felt that when I thought I'd lost a lot of photos off my computer. Makes you sick to the stomach. I hope that you find a way to recover them.

You may want to check the maker of the card for a utility program that will help you recover images. I have a Lexar compact flash card that is a bit fussy and I bought the recovery software which has helped me recover images that I thought were lost forever - I've used the recovery program 4 times now and am certainly a fan!

And just fyi, kind of on the same lines.... I had an external hard drive sitting on our coffee table as I was working on pictures a few years ago, turned and caught the cord with my elbow and it fell to the ground. Only fell about a foot but it killed my drive and I had to pay $900 to get all of our pictures off of it! It had all of my son's baby photos and his whole life pretty much on it. Lesson learned. We now have them saved in 3 places :)

Richard, have a look at page 59 of your user manual. There should have been a confirmation screen after you selected "format".
I wonder if, maybe, you hit "func set" twice in a row in rapid succession and didn't realize it and that's why you didn't see the confirmation screen?
Anyway, there is mention of a low level format as well as how to cancel a format in progress on that page.
HTH for the future.

What a horrible feeling. Hopefully you will be able to recover those images.

@rrt Richard recuva is a great free recovery program as long as you can place you SD card in a reader.

Hi....been there done that too. Card Recovery works very well http://www.cardrecovery.com/

Recovers tif, raw and jpeg. I got it for $29 with some discount coupon at the time. The free apps are ok but I've just had a less frustrating time with Card Recovery.

Oh my gosh, Richard. I bet that was a horrible feeling. I pray you can recover your photos ;)

So sorry for you!!!

I also lost several thousand pictures when my former external hard drive crashed. It was plugged into my laptop, which was on battery (not plugged in). The laptop shut down, and I tripped over the external drive cord when I went to plug it in. Took to our computer professional and he couldn't recover anything.

I can relate to your heartache.
