Suggestions for Photo Editing Software?

August 25th, 2012
Does anyone know any good free photo editing software? I'm off to college soon and unfortunately I'm having technical difficulties installing Photoshop on my laptop....until I figure out how to get it to work, I'm going to be stuck without editing tools for a while.

Any suggestions?

Picmonkey and Ribbet (old picnik) are great online editing tools and GIMP is a great free downloadable one. I know there are others but I have used three and even with PSE10 I still use those one.

GIMP is the free program that I use.

Thank you so much for the suggestions everyone! I'll make sure to look into all of them.

Also, does anyone have any comparisons with photoshop that they can share? As in, what kind of basic or complex options/tools do the programs provide etc.

Here is an article comparing GIMP and Photoshop. There are many more. http://forums.pcworld.com/index.php?/topic/119487-gimp-vs-photoshop/

I'd say Gimp, but I'm kind of tied into it by my choice of operating system. Certainly it looks like a bargain compared to Photoshop ;-) If you do take a look at it, also investigate the Gimp Registry where you'll find an ever expanding collection of plugins and scripts to add to the basic set. I strongly suspect that anything you can do with Photoshop you can also do with Gimp, but you might need to burn the midnight oil to work out how.

As regards Lightroom, there is a free alternative called DarkTable. There's no port for Windows, nor is it likely, but if you fancy playing about with Linux it won't cost you anything to give it a go. All right, maybe a few headaches.

Oh, and finally there's Luminance for HDR which comes in very handy even if you don't want full blown HDR effects. That's free, and runs under Windows.

Hope that's helpful.

I have a similar setup to @automaticslim although on Windows I use RawTherapee for a Lightroom-style RAW editing program, and GIMP for the Photoshop-style processing with layers. Both work really well. I use LuminanceHDR as well as Picturenaut for HDR, and Hugin for panorama stitching. They're all free.

If you want to know stuff about GIMP I'm pretty sure Lee Gordon (@asrai) uses GIMP and knows it pretty well... inside/out. :D

Zoner 14, they are giving a free trial on there whole software to new users for 30days after that you lose layers and raw tools.

GIMP is like Photoshop to a huge extent, to the point I'll use Photoshop tutorials to do things, although occasionally I'll get unstuck because something is so different that I can't work out how to convert across.

Picasa is much more basic than Photoshop by a long way but does have most things you need to use and is very quick to learn.

@pizzaboy Ah, forgot about Hugin. Luminance uses the "align image stack" component of that for misaligned images, so although it's not absolutely necessary, it's worth having for that reason just in case.. The panorama stitching is truly impressive too.

@faylin hey, you want good photo editing software right? I personally use PhotoStudio, similar functions to Photoshop but easier to edit photos with and cheaper to get.
