I'd think about taking pictures of friends doing things together like having lunch, hanging out with each other, sharing a good laugh or cry, or participating in events together. The photos can be candid (with their permission) or not. Don't let the camera distract them from being themselves and have fun with it. You will do a great job.

Congrats on being able to work on the YB! Great way to get some more experience as you start out. Don't know if this is out of your comfort zone but you can do a mix of candids and posed. As you wander the halls or activities look for groups mingling and chatting and snap away. Get some good smiles and laughs while you are at it.

Then (and here comes the comfort zone part for some) approach some groups with a big smile and tell them you are shooting for the year book, and are looking for group shots would they mind posing. As they give their cheesy grins, snap off a couple, tell them thanks a ton and move on (unless they ask you to see them, then you can share). Good luck and have fun with it. :)

Hi Rachael. Glad to hear you're going to be having fun on the yearbook staff. My studio does yearbook photography for about 150 high schools, and if you want to see some examples of both candid and posed groups of friends, you can go to our FB page www.facebook.com/lorsphotography
Look at the "candids"photo album and the "Proms" photo albums for some creative examples. Here's one I took recently. It's only 2 people, but you could easily do the same with a larger group.
