Christened by Bird Poopy

A funny (icky) little story for you. For those that follow me, you know I went to the St. Louis Scottish Games over the weekend. It was all very exciting and I got to handle a bird I've never handled before. Clark is a 10 year old Bald Eagle. He was hatched at the World Bird Sanctuary in a breeding program. His siblings were released into the wild but Clark had to stay behind due to his bad feet.

Anyway, we had Clark on display at the Scottish Games. The picture/link below is of me with this gorgeous hunk of eagle. As we were setting up our table and the perches for the birds, I put all my own stuff down near some hay bales we were using as part of our barricade. When I finished filling water bowls for the 6 birds we had with us, I went to retrieve my things only to be met with apologetic looks and uh-ohs as it was explained that as Clark was being moved from his crate to his perch, he very precisely shot poo all over my lunch bag, water bottle, and yes, my camera. It looked like he'd been saving it up because well, there was a LOT of icky, slimy, sticky poo. I had to laugh because one of the biggest chores we have at World Bird Sanctuary is cleaning up after the birds. And here I thought being outside in a park would exempt me from poo duty for one day. Clark's trainer, Roger, was more upset about it than I was. The nice thing is, poo washes off. It even washes off cameras with no adverse effects. It came off and I was still able to take better than 100 pictures at the games. Though, I keep finding little traces and so I reach for the q-tips to do a little more detailing.

Yes, I forgave Clark and he posed for this picture.

Have a great October everyone!

Sorry about the mishap! But you know the the saying, "Sh*t happens"....I might just have traded that poo goo for a chance to handle Clark! Or at least get up close and personal...I envy your job!

Amazing bird - he was making sure you'd never forget him! And I wasn't even going to post this photo, but I thought it fit with your story:
