Nikon D600 Oil droplets?

October 5th, 2012
It looks like my 2-week old Nikon D600 has oil spots on the sensor, a plague upon early D7000 and now D800 models.

ref the original D7000 thread:

... and the D800 oil thread:

Going back to my earliest shoot (day 2, exposure 107), I can confirm that the spots exist there, too, visible as low as f/8 or higher.

This is not a dust issue, and shuttder cleaning does nothing. There's easily a dozen spots, and no zoom is necessary to see them.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I will not go through the same nightmare that Nikon put their early D7000 users through. I'm going to return the camera, and wait 6-12 months for others to get things fixed.

Too bad, the D600 takes *seriously* great pictures.

@cameronknowlton , ohhh, i am so sorry. you must be so disappointed:/

You must be so irritated. I was afraid something like this was going to pop up. I wish Nikon would work out these kinks before release. I will be waiting too because I can't afford this baby right now!

Pick up some eclipse liquid, some pec pads and sensor swabs and clean it up. I'm sure that'll come right off.

@snipsnap: you know it, especially now that my dealer is refusing to allow a return. let's hope they can step up and work with their Nikon rep here in Victoria, BC, Canada, to facilitate a return. On principal, I'm returning the 28-300mm lens and filters that I bought 7 days ago. at least I can recoup *some* money.
@sudweeks: uh, yeah... I'm going to void the warranty of a brand new camera. I don't think so.
everyone: I'd hold off on buying the Nikon D600 until more time has shaken out to address this ongoing oil drop issue with Nikon's cameras.

I just read thru and got my answer. Thank you for putting this all out there as I was on the fence on whether to purchase it.

@michaelelliott Get an Olympus OM-D

@peterdegraaff - I will read up on it - thx.

@cameronknowlton - Seems like quite a waste to return a camera and wait a half a year when it could be cleaned up in less than 10 minutes. As long as you lock the mirror up properly, use a couple drops of eclipse, and don't use too crazy pressure on it, you're not going to damage anything. And Nikon won't deny any warranty repair unless it's it's something obvious, like if you didn't lock up your mirror correctly and the shutter closes down on your sensor swab.

@sudweeks, great point. but, keep in mind, this is not a single clean, this is endemic to the D7000 sensor transplant. read the discussions re: Nikon's response to 'self-cleaning'.

Having worked in Macintosh authorized service under Apple Canada, I get the manfacturer/provider space. There's a whole new space for this 'gamut' of camera, so retail/Nikon service space has yet to be defined.
It's basically $2100 in escrow for xx? months... your call if you want to self service and abandon warranty support, or go the truly adventurous route and flirt with abandon with the most truly remarkable Nikon ever made. You can make some truly remarkable images with this body, if you're willing to surf the frontline of warranty abyss.

Thanks for the update!! I will wait for now then as well! Not cool, plus I am hoping they come down in price a bit.

@harley84, I seem to be collecting other contacts having the same problem, so we're gathering our body of evidence. I don't see Nikon admitting a problem for a very long time, so this will likely be an issue indefinitely. we can hope that the problem dissipates after x000 exposures... I'm at 750 exposures now, so we'll see how far I can live with the issue once it returns before sending it back again. I'll keep this thread updated.

Good luck with the spots! I just bought my Nikon D7000 in May of this year (2012) and it has oil spots already. Nikon denies that they ever heard of this and they will clean it under warranty. But many say that the spots reappear. Really am disappointed with the company. Canon had the problem and took the responsibility for it and cleaned/fixed their customers cameras. AND Canon apologized for the problem. Not Nikon ....
