Colour Blindness

October 7th, 2012
According to the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Colour Vision Test, I have a slight colour vision deficiency with blue. (Try the test. It's weird but fun: http://www.colblindor.com/farnsworth-munsell-100-hue-color-vision-test/#prettyPhoto)

I was wondering if there are any colour blind/colour vision deficient photographers on this site, and I'd be interested to see if that has an effect on your photos.

And also if anyone without a colour vision deficiency could take a look at my photos, and knowing I don't precieve blues as well, see if there's anything you notice.

Okay, that's it; I'm going into Physics and this will be my PhD thesis. :P

@remirixjones Remi, since your uploads are all SOOC, I don't think any form of color blindness would be evident in your photos. It would be a very interesting study if you did a lot of post processing, though. I wonder if that would tend to skew the image towards cold tones in order to compensate. No need to switch to Physics, though! Bio would still let you research rod/cone ratios and lack of sensitivity to long wavelengths. :)

I also have a slight deficiency in the tritan/blue area.

I found that test exhausting and that the monitor accuracy plays a part also.

@kannafoot Ah...indeed! I never do stray too far from my love (Biology that is). What I was getting at with the difference with photos is something I've noticed all my life is I'll say I like 2 colours together and all my friends will say something along the lines of "are you colour blind or something?". Obviously that gets into the realm of taste in colour, but...yeah. So what I was thinking is maybe someone who's colour blind will take photos of things with more vivid colours because it catches their eye more than something of dull colours. From what I understand of colour blindness, it's extremely rare that someone cannot precieve colour at all.

@swguevin Yeah, monitor accuracy. That's another point. Did you notice it said at the bottom of the test "this is not an official diagnosis" or something along those lines. It's actually done with a set of colour pot thingies so monitor accuracy isn't a factor. I've done the test on 2 differnet monitors and scored within an acceptable range.

I had my eyes check using the Ishihara test and was able to discern the colors. Then moved to the LAPD test and passed with flying colors. I noticed that using the CMK charts and with the help of any graphical tool like Gimp, if you can slide the colors to your actual deficiency and if your brain can still distinguish the difference, there would be a slight chance of improvement once done regularly.

When I tried this test, all I can see is a blank white page. Maybe Dr. Farnsworth is better than Ishihara or my internet is down

I came in with a score of 256 which puts me in the severe range in plate 15/59. If I am reading that duetan 15/59 is the most common. I've know for a long time that I am color blind which is one of the reasons I didn't follow my dad into photography as a profession.

Pics I post are almost all cropped, but I rarely touch the colors.

@mcrt Interesting. I noticed a lot of blues and greens in your photos. Of course that could be because most of your photos are outdoors. :P

@remirixjones When the weather turns bad I'll be inside more, but I have to enjoy the outdoors while I can.
