Which lens to use?

October 13th, 2012
Hi All. I'm new to 365 and so far I'm loving it. I've been shooting for a little over a year now and have begun putting this skill to practice by shooting for friends. I have been asked to shoot the following in the coming weeks: 1) kid at pumpkin patch, 2) a (indoor) baby shower, 3) (outdoor) modeling pics and 4) senior citizens in assisted living facility for Halloween activities . I have different lenses but instead of me telling you what I own would you please tell me what is the best lens to use in each of these settings. I have an idea which but I'm here to network with professionals and that's where you come in. You can simply list 1 through 4 and the size lens to use. I'm currently using a Canon 7d. Thanks so much for your suggestions!!

For an APS-C sensor I would suggest something like...

1) 70-200mm f2.8L IS
2) 50mm f1.2L or 35mm f1.4 L depending on venue size
3) 85mm f1.2 L
4) 50mm f1.2L or 35mm f1.4 L depending on venue size

hope this helps

These are all 35mm
28-70mm f2.8 or so
50mm f1.8
A monopod might be a good idea?
Would also think about extra lights or flash or maybe just a high ISO.
Get some practice in before the shoot.

1) I'd use my 8mm fisheye.
2) not sure...
3) I'd use my 70-300mm for this one.
4) probably my 14-42mm kit lens.

But I'm far from one of these professionals that you are asking.

i'd use a mix of :
- 24-80 f2.8L
- 50mm f 1.4

aperture will depend on what youre trying to get per shot and i'd definately play around with "portrait" apertures such as 5.6 and 8 but would also stop it right down to f2 on the 50mm to get some really shallow DoF.
With the indoor shots, you may need to stop it right down if youre trying to use natural light or else get a flash setup
