I am no portrait photographer by any means, but I do it for family members......the best shots are those that you take when the people think you are NOT taking photos anymore....Just be very observant of everyone's behavior.....try to predict what they are going to do next....if you are between pics and someone starts telling a joke, get your camera ready and capture them laughing.....this is an example of that:

Also, get up on a ladder....or get down on the floor...for added interest.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! How exciting that they have asked you to take the family pics!

Pinterest is always a great place to get family portrait ideas, just in case you have not looked there.

How exciting for you!
Try looking on Pinterest for ideas that you think they may like or look at sample cards on Shutterfly, Vista Print or Zazzle. I think outside looks great. Do they have any hobbies or things they like to do as a family? It's hard getting a group to all look at you and smile nicely so getting them doing something or interacting with one another usually works.
Have fun and let us see what you come up with!

If you're going to be doing a bog standard portrait too, of people standing up, and some more people kneeling down in front, please always make sure a knee is up. Having both knee's on the ground makes people look like they have no legs, something my old local picture Editor insisted on when we shot groups of people, like football teams!

I did a summer shoot last year, and it was amzing! I had everyone wear their favourite shirts, do their hair any way they wanted it, and told them to have fun! But these guys were little kids (5-14). But I guess it would work with any age. Now that it's Xmas, I wouldn't go with anything with that is too formal (unless they want it), like sitting and wearing the same matching clothes. They should all have one colour in common, either a red or a green. And give then props. Every person/family loves when you try to put your own spin on things. Also keep them moving, when they are in one spot for too long they start to gett antsie. Also get a lot of action shots!
Now I'm only 15 and I have done 3 shoots before! Shocking right? But these tips really got me to get them perfect side of their personality.
Good luck!
