Filters

I would like to invest in some filters to play with. I am looking to shoot waterfalls plus would like to invest in some novelty type filters. I have tried to read up on ND filters but that has only confused things when working out how many stops I need. Any suggestions? Novelty filters?

ND filters are definitely a go. If your not looking for something too expensive, get one like this:

If you have a bit of money to throw around, definitely go for one of the gradual ND filters, like the ones from LEE:

If your really want to go cheap, make your own! There's a great tutorial here, but the post-processing is a PAIN, as the glass used gives the shot a green tint.

Have fun shopping!

I'd recommend a circular polarizer. around dusk, it's as effective as an ND filter, and helps to saturate colours. plus, it's great for shooting water or windows, when you want to minimize reflections.

if you're going for an ND, you might want to avoid a variable ND (ND X) filter, as it can seriously vignette at wider apertures (since it's usually much deeper than a single ND filter would be). I own 3 ND X filters, and I'm not happy with any of them.

skip any coloured filters, unless you're shooting film. you can adjust white balance in camera, introduce a digital filter in camera, or apply one in post processing.

7dayshop.com has some cheap nd filters. There are reviews and instructions on you tube. A polariser for sunny days might be useful too.

My suggestions are to get a circular polarizing filter and a variable ND. You can stack these and adjust to VND to get the effect you diesre.
