For me, I've found the best way to get customers is to start with those you know. Do shoots for family and friends and get your photos out there that way. A lot of my clients have come from seeing pictures I've done for people they know and wanting to have their own shoots done. Good luck!
That's what I did for a limited number of people. I also still offer free or way discouted shoots to certain people if there's a specific skill I'd like to work on. For instance, I have a friend who could never afford a full price newborn shoot and I would love to get more experience photographing newborns (considering specializing in this at some point down the road), so I offered a free newborn session to her. That way I get to play around a little and she gets free images. That's what my picture of the day from yesterday is from.
To clarify- I don't do free or discounted shoots often, just as the occasion presents itself as something I'd really like to work on. You learn very quickly that you can't give away all your work. Waaaay too much tine and effort goes into it for that :)
