Underwater Cameras

January 8th, 2013
Hi, I love beach photographer and am thinking of buying an underwater camera. Anyone got any tips for me or uses a particular brand/type that they find good. I dont want a casing for my current Canon 7D...rather a proper underwater camera for shooting waves, surfers etc.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

I have a point and shoot underwater camera, hardly use it at the moment, no water in the outback. Haven't seen it in that long that I can't even remember what make and model it is. Took some great shots, if that's the type of camera you are interested in then i will get it out of the camera bag and tell you what it is.

Hi
You need to look on the scuba diving sites for a purpose built case that holds generally a point and shoot camera, these are rated to either 10, 20, 30 or 40 metres of water the camera and case come together and all required operating buttons are duplicated on the case. I have a Sealife case and camera with a 8 mp sensor, it will also take video as well

I have this one http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-D10-Waterproof-Stabilized/dp/B001SER460
It is a Canon Powershot D10. I have a rubber case and a floaty chumz strap on it. It's pretty good.
I would love to do something more pro but this isn't bad. Goes to 33 feet (though I haven't tested that) per the specs. Takes pretty great pics underwater. I was looking for something midline as far as price so that is one reason I chose this. Good Luck

I have an older Panasonic FT1 that I quite like (Panasonic just announced the FT5).

Here's a short video taken with the camera. Watch it get dunked at the end... ;-)

I have an Olympus TG-820, and love it.Both for the underwater capability and as my carry everywhere point and shoot. Have taken in the shower, swimming pools, the ocean, and dubious bush pools, with no problems at all. Haven't had the opportunity to take much underwater shots, but have seen others and the the shots are great. When I take it swimming, I just loop the camera strap around my watch or bracelet, ......they don't float!

Panasonic ts3. Short video. https://vimeo.com/27976563

it does still shots ok as long as the water is clear and there enough light.

I have a Canon IXUS (P&S) in a dedicated Canon housing and an Olympus Pen EP2 in an Olympus housing with strobe attached. Both are neutrally buoyant and have carried both (at the same time) when scuba diving and stayed perfectly dry down to about 45m. The biggest issue for me was shutter lag. I had to wonder if a housing for 5DII and strobes would have been better. If you are diving I think you'd want strobe. I think for even surf shots the shutter lag may be an issue, or perhaps it is just me.

In my opinion, the key with any u/w camera be it a land camera in housing or one designed to be taken u/w is maintaining it. Greasing (silicon) the seals/o-rings and washing it in clean fresh water and letting it dry thoroughly before opening it.

@isunseasurf
I think it depends on how deep you want to go.
For a few years I've had canon ixus (90 and 95) in dedicated 40m depth cases (that have been deeper than 50m)
One important thing is the colour shift that occurs as you go under water, with red being absorbed and everything going Blue. The canons allow a button to be assigned white balance restoring the normal colours.
The waterproof cameras without housing tend to max out at 5m with no colour balance
