Intend to use this with my EFS 55-250mm canon zoom lens. Anyone had experience with these? I need to go to the shop and have a play but really would want the ability to still be able to Auto Focus with the lens. Get the impression from the description that this might not be an option.
indeed, for that price you could buy a nice old telephoto and change your focus screen for a split screen one (depending on what camera you have) - and learn to enjoy manual focus - my main lens is set to manual 80% of the time - and the other main lens I use has no auto focus, auto iris, or auto exposure options
I have tried a teleconvertor on a Minolta SLR and I would say don't do it.
They cut down the light getting in to the lens and cause all sorts of other issues, like stop autofocus working. I would buy a 2nd hand lens as @styru says or maybe hire one for the day. A 70-300 would not be too expensive.
I have a 1.4x converter, which I think works pretty well. It is a Canon one though and costs quite a bit more. Few points...
- Typically, in the past, budget converters have not been especially good quality.
- 2x pushes the limits a bit more than 1.4x, in terms of distortion etc. and you lose 2 stops instead of 1.
- As Jessops say, you might expect best results with a prime lens - the more complex zooms don't seem to work as well with converters.
Also, I played with a similar one a while back, and my feeling was that what you gained in 'length' you lost in quality..
Pictures taken without it and selectively cropped afterwards were still better - less pixels - but better optics and lighting etc. that made up for it.
I have a kenko x2 converter which I rarely use now, took some wedding photos with it using my 50mm and found the images came out very soft and a bit cloudy...
I have a Canon 1.4x for my 70-200 and that's another story entirely! I cannot notice any difference in my images. (they are a lot more expensive though as @johnf said)
