Which battery pack to buy?

January 20th, 2013
I recently bought a new Canon camera and want to buy a extra battery pack. The Canon battery pack is $60 however I can find much cheaper ones that are not Canon. So the question is would it be safe to purchase a off name one for a cheaper price or should I pay the money and get the Canon one?

I have Nikon and non-Nikon brand batteries for my D300 cameras and I haven't had problems with any of them. I think my non-Nikon ones are Delkin.

I wouldn't by unbranded batteries for anything personally, for my Canon P&S I purchased an energiser battery, very good and no problems.
For my DSLR Canon all the way, that way if something went wrong with the battery I have some chance of getting help from Canon.
By wrong I mean the battery damaging the camera.

I use off brand batteries & Canon batteries in both my Canon 500D and 7D. The only problem I have every had with them is they don't quite last as long as the originals do. Other than that, no issues to speak of.

I've got both Canon and generic (Hahnel, I think, it's on loan to a friend atm so I can't check) and have had no problems with the generic brand. If anything, I get slightly more life out of it than the Canon.

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I'm sure panasonic did something with their cameras to stop the use of generic batteries, even though other companies still made batteries for panasonic products. Granted, this is panasonic and not Canon, but it would be worth checking for your particular model of canon that you'd be OK with a generic battery.

I've got duracel batteries for my Canon Eos 500D. Personally, I wouldn't buy batteries that were not from a known brand, and these were half the price.

However, were you asking about battery grips? Because again, I would go for a reputable source, and maybe with an added AA section, just in case.

I use a Canon & Hahnel battery in my battery grip on my 7D & they both work equally well!!
I've had no problems matching a non-Canon brand with my Canon battery & don't expect to have any :)

I have used generic batteries for years without problems. Generic or original brand - it is up to you.

The only thing I would say is that if you do opt to buy originals do not be tempted to buy bargains from an unknown source. Buying generics is one thing, but paying more for generics that are faked to look like originals is another thing completely.

I think it's safer to go with Canon-brand stuff, if your budget allows for it.

Here is my experience with my Canon- it came with the Canon battery and I also have a generic. The generic works ok, but for some reason it was always a bit of a tight fit (it's the right battery though). Last time I went to put it in, I only got it about halfway in and stopped because it was so tight. Even just that far in, I had a hard time getting it back out. I refuse to put it in now because I doubt I would be able to take it out again without destroying my camera. I have no idea why it's like this, but for me, I will stick with Canon batteries in the future.
