40mm f2.8

Hi guys,

I am looking for the macro lens for my nikon d5100 ,somebody told me about 40mm from nikon ,not so expensive and it's good . But it's really difficult to find the review maybe not many ppl use it.

I would like to know if you guys know about this lens. I am not gonna use it to shoot insects or something like that ,maybe flowers and some cute stuffs in my house that I want to get closer than my 35mm . Then I don't wanna spend too much money on the macro lens.

What do you think of this lens?

Thank you :)

If it's 40mm, you're going to have to get /really/ close to the bugs to get a 1:1 image - like ~40mm from the optical center... aka, nose to nose with the subject. Longer is better... well, better working distance anyhow :)

@intymalcolm thank you for the infomation :) I know nothing about the macro lens! And I am not gonna use it with the bugs or something like that, I just wanna get close up to my stuffs in the kitchen or food or flower :)

The Nikkor 40mm f/2.8 G is a very good quality lens for general-purpose photography, with the benefit that it can also be used in macro situations. However, it is probably not the best choice if you want to use it *primarily* as your macro lens, because you really do need to get very, very close to your subject.

You mention that you want it for food or flowers and other things that don't move, so you might think getting really close is just fine. The problem there is that you need to get so close, that your camera and your body will block a lot of the light you need for a good photograph. So unless you're also looking at getting something like a ring flash, you'll likely find yourself struggling to get well-lit macro shots with the 40mm.

Personally, I would suggest a focal length in the 90mm - 105mm range for best all-around satisfaction when it comes to macro photography.

I used the 40mm for 6 months, never had any problems and even got some bug shots with it. I do have to agree with everyone else though, you need to get very close to your subject but since you mainly want it for indoor or flower shots it should be just fine. I upgraded to the 105mm in august and in some situations I would still prefer the 40mm for its shorter focal length. It also takes great portraits =)

Consider the 60mm as an alternative to the 105mm and 40mm. I love my 105mm, but would sure like to have a 60mm in my bag, too. Plus, it's cheaper.

I use the 60mm AF Micro Nikkor 2.8 and love it. It was expensive but you could look on ebay for used ones in good condition.
Nikkor confusingly call their Macro lenses Micro so don't be worried by that.

@cameronknowlton first I thought about 105mm too have read it's a good lens but it's too expensive for me and I don't think i will use it so often but if I have money I would go to 105mm :) 60mm? I will check it out too Thank you :)

@joannapayne 60mm I have heard that it's good too, I will check it out, thank you for your answer

also, the 60mm will be a lot easier to hold steady. it's lighter, and a wider lens manifies camera shake less. My 105mm is great for bees and skittish things that like me to keep my distance, and it works amazingly as a walkaround prime lens and portrait lens, especially on a full frame body.
