Upgrade from D5100 to D7000

Guys,

Havinh Nikon D5100 with SB 700 + 18-55 VR +50 mm 1.8G and quite happy with result....but missing the commander mode and FP (High speed sync) for faster shutter speed, DOF button and other features.

I am planning to upgrade to D7000 + 18-300 mm so one lens for all purpose + 50mm.

what do you suggest?

I have the 18-300 mm and the 50mm 1.4. I also have a sigma 100mm macro lens but if your not doing macros those two lenses will cover every situation and cover them well.

I upgraded from a D5000 to a D7000 in October as I had two lenses that I could only focus manually on my D5000. It is significantly heavier and there is a big learning curve with it as the controls are very different -there are buttons for everything, rather than having to navigate the on-screen menus. I wouldn't go back though as I feel I now have a much more versatile camera.

As regards lenses, I don't know for definite, but the 18-300 may have less good image quality than getting a of lenses with the same range. That's might be worth checking before you buy. Also, it'll be heavy compared to the lens you have, so not so great to leave on the camera day to day, especially when you factor in the additional weight of the D7000 body. Have you thought of looking for second hand lenses to save a little money? The D7000 doesn't need the AF-S lenses so there are a lot more second hand ones around.

I just bought the 18-300. I love the lens at the 300 and have got some incredible shots of butterflies and birds. I haven't used the other ranges of the lens so much. I am using it on a Nikon 7000 which is new. Most of my photos on my newly joined 365 are using this camera. I have a 60mm macro lens that is doing some great things with the camera. I carry the two of them in my bag and am constantly changing them. But I love it at the 300mm - very clear.

You wont be disappointed with the D7000 for a cropped sensor. Funy enough I have a nearly new D7000 to sell having just ugraded to Full frame ;-)

Hey I have the D3100 and my father uses the D7000, which I wish I had instead of my camera. It is a bit of a jump, but if you are going to get into serious photography at any stage, which I find myself to be doing I would skip it all and get to a D600 or D800....the 800 is next on my list.
Anyway, you certainly get more camera out of the D7000 compared to the 3100 or 5000/51000.
