Ideas for Architectural Photos

February 14th, 2013
My boyfriend's mother is redecorating a room and wants me to get some photos of some of the lovely Plantation style houses and abandoned buildings that are sprinkled across Eufaula, Clayton, Georgetown and Onward towards home. However, although there are numerous houses I can think of that fit the profile, I'm a bit at a loss as to what really to do for it. Seeing as how I never really dabble in Architecture unless it's fallen down [at which point it becomes Urban Decay], I figured I'd come to you guys since many of you have given me amazing advice in the past. :D

Easy to start shooting the smaller details of each building (windows, doors, roof lines etc.). You can get quite a bit of interesting details with those alone.

Or do the whole building in different lights (sunrise, sunset) to play with shadows or angles.

I sometimes prefer single representations of the architecture.....single elements such as a section of fence, elaborate fretwork, the list can go on and on. I stayed in a great hotel in New Orleans, and they decorated with all black and white framed and matted doors and windows.

This is a folding screen in my living room......

And this captures all I need from this great old church.....

you can start with details such as a window, doorway, column, etc. Then work your way up to a portion that makes you love the property such as a porch, or the front steps leading into a door or maybe how a tree is in front of the corner of the house. Sometimes stepping back and getting a wide view of the house across the field, behind the fence or down the driveway gives a feel. I like my architecture in black and white or sepia a bit more, which could all work in one room together a bit better because it provides the consistency.

Lots of detail with little reference point

A small detail from a unique angle (chandelier)

Stairs and doorways

Interplay of the bigger picture, but not the whole building

Pulling back for a wider shot and showing the setting (now wishing it was in black and white)

I rather like the bits and pieces instead of the whole building.

@welcometocarolworld Your architecture pictures are STUNNINNNNNG... my God, I wanted to cry. LOVE.... LOVE.... LOVE. That's actually one of my favorite things to photograph (when I can actually find something interesting). I HAD to drop you a line to tell you how amazing I thought they were. I JUST started my 365 project, so I've been perusing the site and found your pics. AND... you just inspired me. Lucky me!! :)
