Tell me... What is your favorite photo app?

September 16th, 2010
Throughout my project I switch between my Nikon P90 and my iPhone for posting each day. Sometimes I use my phone because I am away from home and it is easy to upload right away but other times it is simply because I like the effects I can achieve quickly. I know I am not alone in posting from my phone so it makes me wonder, what apps do you use? What are your favorite apps?

I have an iPhone 4 so I know that there are apps that are exclusive to the iPhone but I know that not all of the apps are exclusive. The world of photography apps is pretty extensive so I thought it would be fun to share our favorites and maybe help narrow down our search for the next fun app to add to our phones!

Here are my top 3 and examples:

Hipstamatic – I know that this is exclusive to the iPhone right now but I am hopeful they will make it available to everyone soon because it is just so darn cool! This is probably the most expensive app I have gotten between the initial app and then buying the additional HipstaPaks but I think I have spent under $10 total. Honestly, I think it is worth every single penny!

Percolator – I discovered this one through Peter Van Allen and I am quite hooked. It works great with regular photos that you have taken as well as ones that have been taken through other apps you have installed. I love the colorful abstracts it creates, the ease of use and the little adjustments you can make to change the picture. Plus, for .99, it is quite a steal!

Adobe Photoshop Express – A great basic editor and, for free, the price can’t be beat! Straighten, crop, adjust exposure, add borders and effects and easily undo changes that you make. Quite handy!

My iphone is one of the reasons I am actually getting this thing done! Haha. :)

I *have* hipstamatic, pictureshow, camerabag, and ps express. I like all of those, BUT, I find I get a better effect and am generally happier with my iphone photos if I import them into the comp and pop them into Lightroom and mess them with them there. I have quite a few iphone photos that I personally don't think you can tell are cellphone photos.

I'd also recommend camera+ and colorsplash for the iphone4.

I have heard good things about camerabag but have not picked it up yet. I was checking out Retro Camera and it looks like it has some neat effects availble. There is a free version you can download but they add text to the bottom of your pictures. I definitely want to pick up Color Splash. I have not had a chance to play with selective coloring much.

great, love all these apps but especially PictureShow (random effects are wonderful - see image below) also really like to use PhotoGene and Iris (about as near to Photoshop as you can get with curves, layers and preset layer modes)

I think my 3 faves are the same as yours. Absolutely love Hipstamatic! Occassionally use PS Express and have recently discovered and am loving Percolator. I also enjoy CrossProcess. I post more from my iPhone than I do from any other camera at this point. I also have a Nikon D90 DSLR and a Leica D-Lux 3 point and shoot. But I truly love my iPhone 4 for the everyday! It has a higher resolution than my first digital camera, which was a 4 MP Olympus.

I think the only camera app I've paid for is CameraBag, and I love it. I adjust most of my shots on my laptop using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but If I'm going to try to adjust the image levels within the phone I like Mill Color, a free app from a UK-based visual effects company. And More Mono is an app that gives some interesting results.

I'm still on the iPhone 3G, so I'm looking forward to expanding my palette when I upgrade to 4.

Okay, I just downloaded PictureShow and it is fantastic!!! Thanks for the recommendation Peter! That app is currently offered at .99 which is an awesome price. I have been playing with it with my Dawn Patrol shot and am very excited!

I also just downloaded CameraBag and it has some great features, too. Nice! Thanks for sharing your recommendations! We all know there is an app for that but it is nice to know which ones are worth downloading! =D

I just installed the trial mode for CameraBag, The pictures seem to have the CameraBag logo on it. Would it still be there if I purchase it?

Forgot to mention Autostitch (works a treat), GorillaCam (great for timed and multi exposures), TiltShiftGen (for those miniature effects), SlowShutter (up to 25 seconds exposure, nice abstracts) and TrueHDR (must be the best HDR app out there), also check out iphoneography.com for the gen on all the latest iphone apps

Thanks for all of the fantastic recommendations!!! I am going to have to pace myself downloading them all but I have created a note on my phone of apps suggestions to download as $$ allows. =)
