Lens help!

I am currently thinking about buying a Zuiko Digital 35 mm F3.5 Macro lens for my Olympus E-410 and before I do would like to know what you know about extension tubes? What is the different? Which is better the Macro Lens or Extension tubes? I am looking for a lens to help me take close up pictures of nature.

I'm looking into buying a macro also. I've been reading for a few months on them and all I've read is got me thinking I need a macro ZOOM ! Maybe 100mm or so ! This way I can get closer from a little distance away so as not to scare off any bugs, hummingbirds, etc. Gotta hear what others are using though ! The manufacturers reviews are just there to sell product !

A lens is always going to be better - the optics are designed for the job. Extension tubes are more economical, of course, and can still work very well. It's mostly about how serious you are and what your budget is. Extension tubes basically just increase your focal length, but at the expense of some aperture and often your lens control (auto-focus etc) depending on the type. They're great to have, but have limitations a lens does not have.

And Pete - yes, the longer the focal length of your macro the further back you can be. A 60mm macro is going to be just about on top of your subject. A 100mm or longer is going to give you up to a couple of feet to play with.

Extension tubes are great for graphics work. Also a poor mans macro. I suggest a +1,+2, and 4 diopiter attachment to the end of the lens, similar to a filter. For $39 bucks, they do amazing things.

@jinximages Thank you for your insight it makes sense. I think I will be considering a macro. It is something I have been wanting for a while. Its a bummer that I have to order it and wait up to 4 weeks for delivery. Well, looks like I will be going to the camera shop this weekend and placing an order for Macro lens.

@moncooga Thanks Chris. In addition to deciding on ordering macro lens I will see if they will let me try out extension tubes just to see what they can do. :-)
