Finding your style

October 25th, 2010
Hello fellow lovers of photography! I'm new, both to this site, and to photography--but in the short time I've been playing around with images, I've fallen head over heels in love with this medium. Here is my question: I've heard that finding your style is important in photography, but how do you go about doing that, especially when so many others have established styles that are now standards, such as "Holga", "Orton", etc? Any idea????

You just have to mess around for a while and find what works for you, I guess.
I personally am still in the process of finding my style, and it changes every once in a while. Just take pictures of things you love.

I agree with Stephanie- for now, being where you are new to photography the most important thing for you is to just click away. Learn as much as you can stand about your camera, composition, lighting, and general photography terms. Play with angle and perspective. Pick a photo you like and try to "copy" it. The more pictures you take the more your style will start to show, but just because you "find" your style doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't shoot other things as well. Have fun- if you worry to much about finding your style then you will start to loose focus on the fun side of photography!

Maybe a good place to start would be to browse and see what catches your eye. You could find that you're drawn to macros, abstract, portraits, etc...

Try everything! 8D

I don't think you have to "find" your style--your photos will reflect who you are and that will BE your style. Does that make sense? You'll make your own style.

I think your "style" will show itself ! Take a lot of pics of whatever interests you the most ! After a while you'll be photographic the things you like in a certain way....B&W, Landscape, etc. That will be your "style" !

Thanks for your responses! Taking lots and lots of pictures just makes sense--I'll continue to do that, and hope something feels 'right' eventually. There are some very talented people on this site, and a few of them I've noticed have a definite fluidity to their photographs...a feeling of one big composite, and wondered how that talent comes about. Thank you, again..

Welcome to 365 and the world of photography!
I hope you have a ton of fun on here- I know I am.
Everyone on here is such an inspiration you're going to have no problem photographing.

Like everyone has said, you're "style" is something that's completely established by you! Even if someone else has done it, there's always going to be something that sets you aside from them.

I've been into photography for almost 2 years now and to be honest with you, I don't think I've established a style yet!

Through the inspiration of others on this site, I can learn about new techniques and way to photograph. Doing this, I can try new things and find out what I feel comfortable doing until there's something I throughly enjoy and repetitively do.
Then, it will become my style.

Essentially, that's how i think you can develop your own unique way of photographing. Do you know what I mean?
It's monday, I may not make much sense, but I hope you understand!

And good luck in the future!

I agree with what everyone else has said. Just go out and do. Explore the site and see what sparks your interest. Play. Your "voice" will become more distinct as you go along and you will start to see it yourself.

Experiment until you find your niche.
Sometimes experimenting can become your niche, who knows :P

Do what you feel is right... that will become your style. :)

What they said!

One of my most thrilling moments was when a couple of other pro photogs (who I've looked up to for years) told me that they can now recognise that I'm the author of a particular photograph when they see it, and that my own unique style is becoming more and more obvious even as it changes. I was on a high for days after that.

I struggled to develop my own style, because I thought that's what I needed to do. But when I stopped overthinking, stopped trying to control shots so precisely to match what I've seen others do, and started to rely on my own instinct, that's when my style found me.

Learn, practise, and learn. When your skills become more second-nature, your style will start to emerge. And it will also change - the evolution is necessary, and constant. You just have to allow your style to show, and it will - you can't force it without feeling like a fraud.

Just keep shooting. :)

I believe you don't find your style. Your style finds you :-)

I love the nature of all these responses--thank you!! It definitely takes the edge off of needing to define my style..I see its something that will come with time and practice. Hopefully! ;)
