Sharing info on your 365 pages...

November 4th, 2010
I noticed a change in the info that shows up on each page. It used to be that you had to click on "more details" to see what type of camera someone was using and all the EXIF data. In some cases, there was no EXIF data provided and I always wondered how some users were able to block that from showing up. Regardless, now it shows up on the first page what type of body each of us is using. I guess I feel that should be up to each indvidual whether they want to share their equipment choice, lens choice, EXIF data, etc but nowhere in my settings can I find it. Can anyone help? Ross is there a way to customize those settings?

Hey Dayna :) nah, I'm fairly certain there's no setting on here for that - the only thing you can really do is remove the info before uploading, if it bothers you.

When I enhance a photo on Paint Shop Pro, the Exif info doesn't show up anymore ! But I really don't care anyways ! Most of the pros I read about (Ansel Adams..etc) are more than happy to volunteer the info ! I could take photos all day long trying to duplicate how a pro did it....in the end, it's not even the equipment or the settings....the shot is first composed in someone's mind....no one in the world can duplicate that ! Even though I'm a relative newbie to photography, not many people can duplicate a shot I take, or one you take !! Exif info is good for newbies as it gives them an idea of how to use the camera ! Beyond that, it's pretty much useless info ! Even the type of camera doesn't really matter...I've got over a thousand dollars into mine, and all over the internet I see awesome pics taken with a P&S or cell phone !! The shot is in your head !!!

P.S., I looked at your project...I see your info...I know the settings you used....but a lot of your pics have a unique composition that I wouldn't necessarily think of....you're unique !!!

thanks you guys - i'm actually not concerned about it for the reasons you mentioned, i think just in general i am touchy about having control over what I put "out there" on the internet due to some previous bad experiences (not related at all to the 365, but still). I was hoping there were some settings we could adjust. Even the way it worked before, I didn't mind it, if someone was interested they could click on "more detail" and find out the EXIF. For example, I have some family members who seem to feel the need to track what I spend on equipment and by putting it on the front page of each photo it just makes it easy for them to see when I change out my camera body (which I am just about to do). I was hoping to keep things like that private. Oh well, thanks again for the nice compliements.

Hey...that's what family are for !! My family and friends LOVE to talk about me all the time....ya know what that means ??? I'm popular and they're bored with their own everyday lives !!!!!!

Annie as for removing the info before uploading, that's an interesting idea, but it's also part of the Copyright data that gets embedded into my files that are sold to clients.. so I am guessing I'd have to adjust it each time I go to do my 365? I wonder if that's easy to do.... hmmm, I may check into it. Or, make sure I remove it in Photoshop, which I think can be done too. I just haven't tried that before. I set it up but haven't tried removing it.

LOL @ Pete!!!!! Ain't that the truth!

I hope you get it sorted :)

I've made a point of keeping my 365 url to myself - only one irl person knows it. It's kinda funny - I don't want people I actually know to read the things I have in my captions, but have no problem with strangers.

@indiannie_jones I agree, I dont plan on sharing the link or adding the Facebook application... Maybe that will change in the future! :)

Photoshop can remove the EXIF easily. A simple way is to create a new image (blank document) and drag your photo onto it as a new layer. Then merge it as you would anyway and presto - no EXIF. You can still embed your Copyright data afterwards, however you normally do it.

If you use Lightroom, you can also edit your metadata, strip your metadata, or hide/show only certain aspects of it.

You could even have an action that opens a default image taken with your old camera, with the date info (and everything else other than camera) already stripped, and use that for the background layer to use with your new image. That way they'd always think you were still using that old camera. ;)

Personally I've never had issue with people knowing what I use - clients or otherwise - or what settings I've used. And I know that if someone wants to steal my photo, they'll just strip or change the metadata anyway (if they have a clue). And as for family, well, I'm getting paid to take photos, so I'll spend that money on new gear anytime I want and if they give me grief I'll just tell them kindly what they can do with their opinions. Sounds to me like you know some people who don't take your photography seriously. That's their problem - not yours. Your work speaks for itself. You can be confident in that.

I would share what camera I use with anyone who asks. What I find interesting is on the pages were camera information shows on the first page, that information is a clickable link. The ones I've tried all link to Amazon.com. So maybe Ross is using the information as a pay per click to help fund the 365 pages. Not sure of this , but it's certainly possibility!

Dayna, I'm totally with you, i am actually slightly annoyed by this. but I don't really have more time to take extra steps removing all the info, not that i have anything to hide, I took all the photos and they are not super high quality either, but as a private person, I prefer to have the choice whether to share or not to share. I wish there was a button "share" or "hide" or something like that.

Linda, very interesting theory!!!! I wonder about that... hmmm.. as for the sharing of what camera, it's just a particular family situation that I am dealing with where I'd rather they don't know what gear I have. I think on Flickr I was able to turn off the EXIF data info but now it seems to be back, lol. So who knows, you could be right Linda and really I coudn't fault Ross if that was the case. Although I pay for the ACE membership and so do you, no one is required to. And I'm sure even that woudn't cover the cost of operating this site.

Some peoples camera are not even listed. Doesn't bother me but I can appreciate why some want to hid that info.
