I just got a 50mm lens yesterday... I also have the kit 18-55mm lens that came with my Canon Rebel. I am going to be doing some outdoor portraits this weekend for my family (for Christmas cards) as practice for some senior portraits a friend asked me to do for her son... So, i'm a: looking for inspiration, and b: wondering if the 50mm is good as good for outdoors as for indoors? I haven't had time to really experiment with it much yet. thanks!!
Dawnetta I have a Rebel XSi with the 18-55 mm stock lens and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Unfortunately my 50 mm is fairly new, so i don't have tonne of outdoor portraits, but i have used it outside quite a bit. Both seem to do a pretty good job (in my opinion at least). Here's some of my results:
I think the biggest thing you've got to watch for with outdoor shots are shadows on faces.... It was something that (surprisingly & stupidly) I didn't pay much attention to in my first few outdoor sessions. It wasn't until it was brought to my attention that I started watching for it. Here are two of my favorites that I have shared on my project:

Beautiful shots! I especially like your reflection caught in the first one - very nice work!
heres a couple from my 50mm 1.8 outside shots. I love this lens
the last shot was taken inside but next to a large window bringing in lots of natural light.
I really enjoy all of the shots you each posted - thank you! It makes me even more excited to start experimenting with this lens :)
Here are some with my 85...
