Which nikon

So i am planning on upgrading my camera body finally (using a D40 for a few years).

The problem is i can't really tell which is the better body - the D90 or the d5000 (I can't afford a D7000 unfortunately).

I think the D5000 is a slightly newer model but the D90 slightly more features etc. Is that right? having looked at the specs for both i can't really work out which one is the better camera, based on the fact the D5000 is newer

Any serious camera buffs know the answer as to which i should get and why they think that.

Note: I'm thinking the D90 is the right choice but happily be told otherwise if thats the case

I actually think i have answered my own question. having read a few more sites its got to be the D90. not really interested in the HD movie stuff so looks like D90 is the better camera

My boyfriend has a D90 and it is an amazing beast of a camera, I would still be using it if I hadn't got my D700.

May I suggest if you decide to get a D90 that you look into buying a battery grip for it? I think it costs a couple of hundred for the grip itself and an extra battery, but is well worth it :)

Good luck with Ur purchase :D

You're on the money. I would have said the D90 - it's a bit more rugged. Though both are good pieces of kit, I reckon.

I love my D90, you can't go wrong with one of these!

I was torn between the two when I got mine and was told by the guy in the shop that the differences between the models aren't worth the price difference as the main one is that the D90 has an aluminium body. This came from a guy who is a photographer. I went with the D5000 and couldn't be happier.

you might benefit from the d90 in the long run...mainly because tons of lenses can AF on the d90 while only AF-S lenses (and a few others?) are the only ones that can AF on the d5000, and AF-S lenses are a bit pricier. been using a d3000 and my current predicament is about most of the lenses i want will not AF on the d3000. :)

I would say neither - go for a cannon :)

@hednod Seems we share more than just a love of Pompey (yeah, yeah...).. I also have the D40 (my own camera) and the D5000 (works). The D5000 is great, but in the 6months I've had it, I've used the video feature once, just to mess about!!

The D90 will enable you to use non-AF-S lenses, which broadens your possibilities, as the D90 has the focusing motor on camera. If you have all AF-S lenses (which the D40 needs), then the D5000 is a similar choice as the D90 in most ways.

The D90 is more expensive, but I have read in many places that it is the best pro-sumer camera out there...if you're a Nikon person (this is one of those "Chevy-Ford" arguments that will never go away with Canon and Nikon.

I'll take Nikon.

Next.
