I LOVE my 500D - and have to say the best thing I have bought is the f/1.4 50mm lens. I haven't taken it off since I bought it! I'm considering buying an external flash soon so would love to hear from anyone who already has one...
I also have the 500D :) and like Slambert, I recently got the f/1.4 50mm and it is simply SENSATIONAL. :) Still use my other lenses though (18-55 and 55-250), :)
I have the 450D, very similar model (in fact the only real difference is the HD movie mode). Your first purchase should DEFINITELY be the 50mm f/1.8 - it's so cheap you'd be crazy not to...
Oh yes, now that I remember. I was thinking about this last night - I only installed all the programs from the 500D CD onto my laptop yesterday but haven't even opened them yet. Do you guys use them? Mine's the European one, if that makes any difference. Before buying it, I read online that there'd be two CD-ROMs and I only have one.
They are: Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility, Picture Style Editor and ZoomBrowser EX. Perhaps that's standard with any Canon dslr?
@vikdaddy got any of your examples vik of that lense you mentioned? Also i think there is high range iso with the 500. And not forgetting the 3 million mpix difference :) (well this is what mr jessops told me anyway) not that im being pedantic. ;)
@azza_l The ISO range won't make that much difference IMO, and the extra 3mp on the sensor size, if anything, will make your pics look more grainy. As for 50mm, practically all of my portraits are taken with it, along with any others you see with a narrow depth of focus. Here's some examples...
@vikdaddy Sweet! Nice one , may be thats the next purchase for then. Was just stating the geek tech facts though. I think read somewhere that anymore then 8megapixels with any camera and you dont really notice the detail. The 550 is 18, buts that sold more as a HD camera.
@azza_l 18mp is too much really for an entry-level D-SLR like the 500/550D. My compact Canon S90 is 'only' 10mp but shoots in RAW, and the sensor in it is larger than most compacts but smaller than a D-SLR; any more and the noise will be really noticeable. In fact, even at 10mp I notice the noise as being higher than my D-SLR at 12mp, so I reckon about 8mp would have sufficed. That's also why they say Nikons can handle high ISO better than Canons, because they have less megapixels in their D-SLRs, generally speaking.
It's what makes me laugh about novices bragging about the number of megapixels their compacts can do, as if that's an indication of the quality of the camera.
@vikdaddy ah ok I see, never really gave Nikons a chance to be honest when I bought my 500d. I think because I has an Isux 75 point and shoot for a few years and was so impressed it seemed only right to continue with the canon brand as I knew the layout of buttons and trusted it as a brand I guess.
I'm still trying to get used to it though

Help? :D
