I just got a new camera (Nikon D5000) and I'm looking to get another lens when I get some money together. I would love a macro lens, but have also heard a lot of good stuff said about the 50mm f1.8 lens. So, I have a couple of questions...
What are the pros and cons of both?
What's a good lens that would work with my camera? I know that if I want to be able to autofocus, I need to get an af-s lens as the camera body doesn't have an autofocus motor.
I no longer shoot Nikon, but can verify that the 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens.
Really, it depends what you want to shoot - macro, or portraits. The 50mm will not do macro, but the macro will do an ok job of portraits, though noweher near as well as the 50mm.
You should really go into a camera shop, with your camera, and try some lenses to see what you like. That's usually the best bet, when you're not sure what it is you want to spend your money on. :)
@jinximages - thanks. @vikdaddy - you're one of the people I've heard saying great things about them! What is it about the len that you think is so good?
@wormentude It's so cheap! And it's so sharp too, and great in low-light conditions. i also think it makes you a better photographer because a prime lens makes you think about composition more, as you can't simply zoom.
@wormentude Ooh I don't know about that, I shoot Canon. I know that Nikon do a cheap version too. I'd be surprised if you can't auto-focus with it as you can with Canon's, and you know Nikon wouldn't like Canon to be one step ahead with such an important lens.
@vikdaddy - There are two versions, depending on whether the camera has an autofocus motor built in. Mine doesn't, so I need the more expensive lens. So was really asking whether it's worth paying quite a bit less but having to manual focus.
I have a Nikon D3000 and i just upgraded my lens to a Sigma 70-300mm , it has the macro and it has the automatic zoom.. what was also great is it was reasonably priced. I love the way it takes pictures.. I bought it off Amazon.com
I originally went into a camera store, asked questions, tried lens.. and when i found the one i wanted took the info down and researched on line..
Agreed. The 35mm is very nice. And for the price (like the 50mm) it can't be beat. As was mentioned it does autofocus on the D5000. I don't believe the 50mm will. To each his own.
More toys are always fun.
Let us know what you got.
