DPI of photo - how to change?

November 20th, 2010
Does anyone know how to change the dpi of a photo? Mine is 200 something and the newspaper to which I'm submitting wants something "at least 300 or more". I do not have photoshop. Thanks for any info anyone can give...!

You can change the settings on your camera to give you more. Other types of photo editing software will also be able to do it. But I'm not sure that you can even increase the number, or if the picture would look any better if increased through software. I'm usually decreasing mine.

What they probably want is a certain physical size at 300+ DPI. The actual DPI setting of the file is irrelevant, really, as long as they have enough pixels to get a decent quality print. So just ensure you are submitting the maximum file size and you should be fine. If you talk to them and they want specifically formatted files, just download something like GIMP (free) and you can set your DPI and physical size in that.

DPI is in fact in relation to printing, and has no effect on the actual digital file. None whatsoever. You can only really change the PPI of a file, and that is nothing more than a determination of a for-print resolution. I hope that's not confusing! So, if you resize your image (downsize or upsize) you can set both a physical (print) size and a PPI to set it at the *exact* pixel count you need for a particular size print and particular native print resolution for the printer being used.

Thank-you so much - that makes sense. I'll get gimp and see what I can do with that. I didn't want to take the shot all over again, but for the future will see if my camera can take a higher resolution. Thanks for the help!
