Cold batteries

November 21st, 2010
I've taken my DSLR with me wherever I go this summer but I don't always use it. It's been fine in the camera bag in my trunk (don't want to leave it in the car when I'm indoors somewhere). But I've heard it's not good for batteries to get cold - and they certainly would here in the trunk for an hour or two...or three... Do you think it would be worth it to take the battery out when I go indoors? Or doesn't it matter that much? Any expert advice? or experiences?

I wouldn't leave the camera in the cold either. I would think the cold could cause the lenses to fog / frost up when they are exposed to warmer temperatures. It is probably not good for the sensors in the camera. I know when I leave my cell phone in the car in the winter timne, the life of the battery is shortened. I would keep it in a warmer place.

@digitalrn That makes sense. Can't imagine it would be good for any part of the camera, I guess. It's between 25 and 40 degrees F here so it's not too cold yet. But it gets way below zero so certainly wouldn't leave it out then.

It's probably not good to keep ANY kind of technology including cameras, in a place where there is extreme temperature. We've had a few CD's melt because they were sitting on the dashboard of our car all day in the sun! I guess it's better to be safe than sorry! =)

The cold allways shortens battery life,in allmost any device. But if it "dies" on you and you are in desperate need for a few more shots, take it out and rub it to your coat or put it in your pocket and keep it warm with your hand,a few minutes. The battery will miraculously come back to life :)
