Was it something I said?

November 24th, 2010
Whenever a photo of mine has been on the popular page, I have used LittleSnapper to create a screen shot of the array of pictures including mine which are displayed at that time. Looking back over the months, I have had my pictures represented pretty consistently since April when I started keeping a record. Since Nov. 1 I have not been included at all. Now, I realize in the scheme of things it is not important whether my pictures are "popular" and I certainly am not criticizing the fine work that has been selected, but don't you think it is odd that I went from frequent to total shut out literally overnight? Just wondering...

I see what you're talking about Allison. I think "something is different", it seems that the popular pictures are staying longer... so we see fewer... may be I'm wrong too. I guess the monkeys have changed ;-)

Hi Allison - I see you have nearly 200 followers - that shows that you are very popular. I'm not on PP either but give me a choice between that and the the rapport built up with other 365ers through their comments, I'd take the latter any time - I'm learning lots more through that. There are a few others who were appearing with more frequency on PP who don't appear so much now, so you are not on your own.

I think he changed how the "popular" photos are picked to show off some of the folks with less followers.
November 24th, 2010
Yes, it was something you said...how can you sleep at night after those comments? You have offended the entire community, you will probably never be on the 'pop' page again. Just a joke...lol. The 'pop' page is calculated based on # of views / favs / comments. No person directly picks photos to be featured on it. Increase the above mentioned, and your photos stand a better chance of making the cut for the page. Based on what I gather, commenting others work is your best bet to increase them. That and taking good shots, of course.

How are they "picked" for the popular page? Is it by number of views?
November 24th, 2010
*yawn* another 'i'm not on the popular page' thread. :o)

Its an automated process so your obviously not getting the same amount of views vs favs vs luck that Ross built into the algorithm. And the site is a live site so Ross maybe changed the way it worked. Its not odd at all.

Also as the site grows it will get harder as there are more potentials for the same amount of populars chosen.

The last time a similar thread appeared re: either PP or Top 20, can't remember which, it seemd that Ross explained that there is a formula and it is driven by some mathematical figure derived from number of followers, number of views, number of favs, maybe withinin a span of time . . . I think Ross did alter the equation somewhat last month to make PP and Top 20 more accessible to newbies and those with fewer followers . . . I think the mystery makes it more fun, which is what we're all here for, right?

Oh gosh.. I`m here for allmost 2 months now,and not once I`ve made it to the popular page..... *weeps in the dark corner*.....
November 24th, 2010
. . .took me 6 months. . .and now my dreams have been realized. :)

I've not been on the popular page for the longest time either, who do I complain to?

on the plus side i do think the tweaks that occurred earlier this month were a good thing... http://365project.org/discuss/general/2376/the-popular-page

Google changes their algorithm on a daily basis to make results the best they can be, it's no different with the popular page.

@Scrivna
Hahaha,I imagine you would be talking to yourself like Gollum in "Lord Of The Rings" > --"we neeed to beee on the popularrr pageee!" --- "no,we mustn`t,it would be unfair.." ---"yesss we doo...we have the powerrrr..." .... :)

@spaceman ---- Hahahaha!!!!
November 24th, 2010
@spaceman we wants it..... hee hee

@allie912 It took months before a picture of mine hit the popular page and I was pleased indeed. I love it when they get there. sometimes I'm surprised by the photo that gets there. but it's ok with me if they don't. I like my pictures and there are soooo many great photographers here. there's just so many to choose to click on to give that vote. just keep shooting them pictures.

@allie912 You do a great job with your shots. You have a great eye and your comments are very good. We enjoy them and thats what counts the most.
November 25th, 2010
@allie912 I wouldn't worry about the popular page, enjoy the process :) - mind you i've never even made it to the popular page so I might not have the best advice... :)

I was afraid i would sound like a complaining crybaby when I posted my observations, and apparently my fear has been confirmed. My point is not that it isn't fair or I don't feel validated unless I am on the popular page. I really was just commenting on the change in frequency and wondering if I have imagined it or if there has actually been a change in requirements to get on the page. If there is, that's fine. I'll just stop wondering.

the same thing happened to me Allison..some of my recent pictures have been faved heaps and not made the pop page even...who knows and who cares, your photos are wonderful Allison, please don't feel validated unless you make the popular page, let our comments be enough... ((((hugs)))

@spaceman Dude, you gave me the biggest laugh re the weeping in the darkest corner. :0D

Allison, you don't sound like a complaining crybaby...you just sound curious. I've noticed a change too. In the last few days I have definitely noticed a few staying on longer, even with low numbers. I don't always have time to check it, but if you must know, I've had a couple of shots this week I was hoping would make it, and yesterday's actually did! (though I think my American Kestrel shot from the 19th deserved it more...being that I think it is my 2nd most impressive shot of the whole project)

I will admit, it gives me a little kick to get on the pop page. I don't generally get more than about 30 views on my photos. I have noticed that there definitely seems to be a time factor involved. Like when I get a lot of comments and a few faves really quickly after uploading, especially when almost every viewer comments, I'll get a moment or two on the PP. My 2 shots of which I am the proudest on 365 never made it, and some of my mediocre shots have. I agree with Miranda about ultimately preferring the rapport built up with other 365ers through their comments.

I do think that It means something if one of our picture is on pp, top 20, front page or other sites. Why would we visit the page, if it doesnt mean anything. I love all my comments on my picture but I´ll be happy when I see my picture on pp or front page (I havent have a picture in top 20).

So Allison, I can see why your wondering!!! (and no crying baby over that).
November 25th, 2010
I perceive the pp to be made up of randomness rather than number of comments, faves etc as sometimes there are very few comments on pics that make it to the PP. Those displayed are not based necessarily on the best contemporary pics, nor on anything rational. I generally get a spate of pics displayed, followed by none at all despite some of the latter being brilliant and the former being a bit dodgy lol. So if its random it doesn't matter does it although its nice to be up there. As for the popular charts its down to numbers of supporters and faves so if you follow 800 people and they follow you its hardly surprizing you reach the chart...although there are the few that beat the odds and make the charts despite having only a few followers. Now that's something to be proud of, or is it ? After all popular does not mean good lol.
