ok. so my dad has an old school film camera (canon) and we were messin around with it today and had the idea of the possibility of using 'old' lenses on a digital camera. is that possible?? cuz if so i could have my new SLR in the next few months!!!!! :DDD

It depends how old the film camera is. If it uses EF mount for lens attachment, you're in luck. If it is the old M mount, not looking so great. Take one of the old lenses into a camera shop and ask if it will fit, if you're not sure.

Most likely it won't work. Canon used FL mount from 1964 to 1971, then FD mount from 1971 to around 1987. When the moved from manual focus to autofocus, they had to change the mount to EF (what the digital canon DSLRs use today).

What was the model of that old film camera? Let us know what the model is, and someone will be able to tell you pretty quick what lens mount it is.

@sudweeks it's a canon AE-1? (:

no it will not work... it is an FD lens mount... but why not use it for film? You can find good lenses for it cheap... and film is cheap to develop now... you can process a whole bunch of film for the price of a dslr...

@stationary315 - Jordan is correct - the the canon AE-1 is FD mount and those lenses will not work with a Canon DSLR. There are adapters available, but they have elements in them to allow infinity focus, so it negatively effects image quality, and reduces the amount of light that makes it to the sensor.

But if you buy used, it really isn't too expensive to pick up a digital camera. If you watch ebay, you can find a D70 with 18-70mm kit lens for around $300 - $350.
