I need advice on printing photos

December 11th, 2010
I edit my photos at home to my liking. I will have an online site print off a copy, like a 11x14 for instance. I know most sites have the automatic crop feature. If i let it do this, it ruins my composition of my photo. I had photos printed for a 11X14 size, I get it in the mail. The photo doesn't fit the paper, there is a big white border on the top and bottom. So now it looks like crud in the matte. I'm a first timer ordering prints and matting and framing them. So I want them to look just right. I very much need some pointers and maybe some explanations as to why this happens. I know I am probably doing something silly wrong that is causing this.
I want my photo printed to the size I need it to be without it cropping or causing it to have the big white borders.

I really do appreciate any help anyone has to offer me. Thank you

I finally invested in a good photo-quality printer so that I can control my printing. That said, Shutterfly does excellent on-line printing which allows you to view your photo in the size you are ordering and make adjustments as necessary before you order. The problem is the ratios are not consistent for all sizes (a 4 x 6 for example, does not directly translate to a 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 without some cropping). Shutterly lets you adjust for this, so you control how the final version looks . . . I frequently edit my photos first with PhotoSuite or Picnik, then download to Shutterfly . . . so you are not "stuck" with your SOOC shot and their limited editing capabilities. Hope that helps . . .

What site did you use? I 'know' why it happened, and I can give you site specific instructions... it will be because your X by Y didn't equal 11x14 which would be X * 11 by Y * 14... than check you DPI settings some website over rule this, some don't...

do you have the file you sent them? what is the resolution on it? and on the print how much white space is there... ball park it... 1/2", 3 cm... ect...

Donna:
Websites such as bayphoto.com and whcc.com let you download a software really easy to use called ROES. Once you have it, you drag and drop your image there and click in the size you want. You will see where it will be cropped, and yo ucan change the size or move the image until the limit of the size, knowing how much will be cropped off in that size. Does that make sense to you?

Printing can be a nightmare when it isn't working right! Do you have Photoshop? Elements will do. Or Lightroom? It is always better to resize your file exactly for the print if you have the software to do it - this not only ensures you get the print cropped just how you want it, but also ensures you don't lose detail and sharpness by submitting a PPI different than that of the printer's native resolution, not so important for small prints, but certainly noticable for 11x14's.

@icywarm
2198x2378 is the size i sent. The photo is in my album, it the park benches "Alone". I had Shutterfly print it. I had them do it twice. The white on the top and bottom is an inch or a little more on each end. I used picnik to edit it. I have been taking pictures for years, not really knowing much about my camera or photography or editing or printing.

@lynnmwatson I had shutterfly print it. The smaller prints have printed fine, its the larger ones I have trouble with.

I don't have a good photo editing program. I really do appreciate everyone helping me. I just ask that you are patient with me. lol

What I do is make a copy of the file and then crop to the size that I want. I have no photoshop, etc. I just use whatever comes with my windows.

That is what i use, then i use picnik

@simonevision Can anyone use Bayphoto? I was under the impression it was for businesses.
THanks!

You can sign up under you normal name: just put your name where it says your name and where it says "company". You don't need any official business license to sign up :)

@ Jennifer @Simone is right just use your name for the biz name. Make sure to watch the videos on ROES so you can get an understanding on how the software works. http://www.bayphoto.com/support/start_firstorder.html You are going to love your prints! Check out the metal prints, that what i use in my office/studio. =) Word of advise: Once you go metal you never go back LOL have a great day good luck and congrats.
