Canon users: Lens opinions?!

January 4th, 2011
I'm upgrading to a Canon 60D fairly shortly, and I'm curious as to what some of your favourite lenses are? I've got a couple in mind that I'll probably get, but I'm interested to know what some of your best purchases are!

Well, what type of photos do you usually take? That will play a large role in determining the best lens. My favorite everyday lens for around the house or a stroll down the block is the 28mm f/1.8. But if I need something with a little more reach or if I want the flexibility of many focal lengths, my go-to lens is a 28-105mm USM II.

ef 100mm f/2.8 macro...

I'm considering the 100mm f/2.8 as well as the 28mm f/1.8 actually. I'm thinking I'd go with the 28mm before I get a macro.
I'm not sure about a zoom lens though. Any recs?

I'd absolutely kill to have a TS-E 24mm as well, but I'll have to keep dreaming :P

I recently acquired both the 70-200 f2.8 IS L II and am so in love with it, It is super crisp even on 100% crops. I also bought the TSE 90mm f2.8 and delighted with it too, added an extender and have used that one as a handy macro lens as well as all the tilt shift fun, have really been delighted with both these lenses.

If you haven't got a 50mm f/1.8 then you're missing out, simply because it's so sharp and so cheap! Other than that, it depends on the type of shooting you're in to. If you need an orthodox 'every day' lens then you can't go wrong with the new(ish) 15-85mm lens. I use it with my 7D and it's awesome. I love shooting landscapes and architecture, so my 10-22mm is used regularly too. Both are really sharp for EF-S lenses too.

For zooms, if you want a wide zoom the 24-70 f/2.8 L is just beautiful. Almost prime-lens sharp. For long zooms, the 70-200 f/2.8 L or f/2.8 L II (always the IS version) are both awesome. I like the Mark I lens for its nice bokeh, and the Mark II lens for its sharpness (though the Mark I is very sharp too). The Mark II doesn't have the same creamy bokeh as the Mark I, but is a bit better in all other areas.

If you like primes, the 50mm f/1.4 is very nice, or the 50mm f/1.2 L if you want that "bit extra". The 85mm f/1.2 is the second love of my life (after Koshi), but probably not ideal for a crop-frame camera like the 60D. If you like the long focal length though (and it can be great for outdoor portraits), the 85mm can't be beat, imo.
