For long exposure (half a second and up)
Tripod.
Low ISO. (100-400)
2 second timer (or remote)
Mid range aperture. (f/13 or so)

what else do you want to know?
I can help out w/ how to get to these functions as i have the same camera

A couple of my night shots have just been using whatever there is there to prop the camera up. A stone wall, a square stand on the railing, anything. I tend to go ISO 100, 30 second exposure and f 22

yea really you can use whatever combination. just a matter of guessing and checking. gets easier w/ practice.

And don't forget if there are street lights nearby to use the tungsten white balance setting on your SLR. Had some horrible yellow night shots till I figured that one out!

you can also lighten photos up in post production

oooh, so i shouldnt be putting my ISO right up for a night shot? i thought that way youd get more light, but they always look rubbish. off to have a go..

Jess, if you have a tripod you shouldn't need to ram up your ISO. High ISO is useful when you have camera shake.

Remember - the longer the exposure the longer light is being let into the shutter. Same with aperture - the smaller the number the wider the aperture is. Wide aperture = more light. Narrow aperture = less focus. So depending on what you're shooting I would choose which aperture you want and select the shutter speed from there (the camera should choose this for you if using aperture priority). I usually choose a mid point - around f8-f10.

Play around with your apertures from 10 to 22 when shooting street lights, each aperture will produce a different/slight variation in the star pattern on strong lights (like street lights) and you will probably have a favorite, for my lens/camera combo I like f/16.

Hi Travis, thanks for your tip, I'll try that. I was already wondering what was creating that star around lights and was blaming a dirty lense for that :-)

Not that I mind the effect, but I just couldn't figure out how to re-produce the ones I did like most :-) I'll give that a try next time I do night shots.
