My left. I'm also a leftie (handedness). Right now my left contact is not the best correction, so it would be nice if I could switch. I think usually dominant eye goes with dominant hand. Is that holding true for the rest of you?
This is all very interesting. I don't have a viewfinder on the camera I use 99.9% of the time but I just got out my one that does to have a practise and I can't believe I use my left. Why would that be when right is my dominant side? Weird!
I use either eye...tend to switch between the two, and sometimes I photograph without looking depending on if I can or not with the angle of the shot etc
@pengu1n im a righty but i can write with both hands (obviously left isnt neat but its on par with my 4 year old haha)... as i mentioned i use both eyes but usually my right so i guess its "right" for me! LOL
Funny, never thought about it, but I'm curious. I use my left eye (though uncorrected vision is better in my right) and I'm right handed. I'm wondering if the dominant side is easier to wink with and so do people look with the non-dominant side eye?
I use my left eye.
Am right-handed but do random things like a lefty (eat, guitar, golf etc)
Really should just learn to write with my right and convert fully to being a lefty!
I am lefty. I started out completely left handed as a kid...but as I was about to go into kindergarten, my mom made me switch to right so life would be "easier" on me. lol. So I can do most things in life, like write, bat and pitch with either hand...however, I can only shoot left eyed.
@sam_cr Right eye, used to use both but someone took the time to pleasantly kick me in the face and if I look through the viewfinder with my left eye my head hurts quite quickly.
Good question and something I've never thought about much but always through my right because I have better sight in my right eye than my left plus it just feels more comfortable.
i am right handed for most of my work and solely use right eye for photography purposes.
and this link will help in determining which eye is the dominant eye.
if im shooting in landscape its right, and in portrait with the left. waas thinking about this the other day and it made me self conscious everytime i put the camera to my eye.
another interesting thought. im like a +6.0 -> +6.5 script for my eyesight which is high, they dont even make daily contacts that high. yet i prefer to take photographs without glasses or contacts. stangeeeeeee and probably bad for my eyes haha.
left eye, unless im at an awkward angle and have to use my right, the viewfinder on my camera is way too the left so that would be why guess :P right handed
Left eye, right handed. Actually everyone has a dominant eye as well (I am left-eyed although my eyesight is worse in this eye). You can tell by making a circle with your fingers and lining it up so you can see something in the distance through the circle you've made. Then close one eye, then the other. With one eye, the object you're looking at will still line up (your dominant eye), with the other eye, it won't line up any more. Not sure how this relates to photography, but it's interesting!
Has to be right eye (I'm left-handed). I like to keep my left eye open while composing to see the full scene before I shoot. Can't really do that the other way around, and definitely not in portrait.
left but I'm right handed.. and sometimes my right eye will go blind or fuzzy or blurry if I take pictures for long times.. ( maybe I'm shutting it too tight)
Right eye, but out of necessity even though I'm left dominant. I have keratoconus and my left eye is so bad it's beyond being able to be corrected with glasses or contacts.
Always the left eye. And I'm keeping the right one closed while I'm looking through the view finder. Just tried it the other way around and it's not working.
Both eyes, depending on what I'm photographing. And I write forwards with my right hand and backwards with my left. Not sure that classifies as ambidextrous, but close!
Right eye, left handed (I think there maybe one or two out there but when will they bring out options on the popular cameras for a left handed version???)
I actually tried this last night, after posting here. And for the life of me I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working until I realized I'd still closed my left eye and attempted to view with my right :|
Right. My left eye is pretty much blind because of an astigmatism. :) lol Right eye has perfect sight. I squeeze the crap outta my left eye too. Gotta stop doing that...wrinkles are a bitch. :)
oh and I'm right handed, but can use my left also I think because of all the guitar stuff. There's lots of lefty things I do...like wearing my watch on my right arm...lol @clarissajohal I can do that too!! haha
I use my left eye...i write with my right, but i eat, and play snooker and guitar with my left. I use my left eye as i see loads more blue with the right. I don't know if this makes me a freak or not.
None. I only use the view finder. I have to learn to look with one eye and it definitely will be the left eye although I am right handed.
Interesting. If I will have time I will brows and look to find out what distinguish , if at all, between the pictures of left eye and right eye persons.
right eye, left hand , but i use my camera the right-handed way-----the only thing is it gets annoying when i cant use my left hand to steady the camera
Interesting fact that you should try and use the same eye. It turns out that on most people one eye is the dominate eye (such as being right handed or left handed). The easiest way to tell is to look at an object with both eyes across a room. Quickly put your hand over the right eye and the left eye. The object should shift slightly when your dominate eye is covered.
So if you are switching per shot, you may actually be throwing your photo a bit out of balance.
You are not a freak if your eye and hand do not match, it is just what is the stronger eye. It also has little to do with which eye has better vision. My right eye is the dominate eye and before lasic surgery it was the eye that had the worst vision.
@sarahbear9995@renabanana Another left-eye-right-hander, like you both!
I'm also a bit odd, in that I'm short-sighted in my right eye and long-sighted in my left... I really can't focus with my right eye. Have tried and failed! @sam_cr An interesting topic Sam :-)
left handed, but I use my left eye, because I can't wink my left eye! never could... LOL
but when I use digital, I just look at the screen w/ both eyes...
@eyebrows So funny you say that because I am a righty and people (my mother-in-law, in particular) always giggle when my left eye pops open and I try to see things outside of the frame. It's nice to be able to see, but I may have to try being a lefty to keep from distracting my subjects :)
I keep both eyes open while I'm shooting. I guess because I'm used to it for my job; I'm a camera operator for TV. While I'm shooting video, I keep both eyes open so that I can see what is going on outside of my frame so that I can move over and catch something that I might not see if I was just looking through the viewfinder. I find that I'm able to concentrate on one eye over the other when I need to, and only need to squint into the viewfinder if it's very bright outside.
When shooting stills, I tend to look with my right eye as that's my eye for the video camera too. Need to squint a little more often as the viewfinder is so much smaller.
I am right handed, look through vf 99% of the time with my left eye, in doing so, I can keep both eyes open. when using right eye, I have to close left eye for some odd reason. great discussion question, and what a huge thread it has created.
How interesting. I always thought it would be the same eye as the hand (right eye, right handed, etc.) but I see from all these responses that there is no "automatic" answer. What a great question to post! I am right handed, and I use my left eye. I have to use my left eye, because I can't see out of my right eye... I thought this was an adjustment I made over time, but now I wonder. It's quite possible, given the responses above, that I always used my left eye and only assumed that because I was right handed I would have used my right eye!
again - interesting topic, thanks for that! =)
I use my right eye most of the time until I need to give that eye a rest and I will use the left. I'm right handed. I have thought about this as well. Thanks for asking.
Right eye naturally, but I can't imagine using my left as that would put my nose pointing into my right hand where it's by the shutter, so it would all get at little crowded there.
For the first time in my life I have a camera with no viewfinder. I thought long and hard about buying this as I thought I would not like it, but I love it. I often shoot with out looking at the screen at all, I literally point and shoot!
I do everything thing else (write, golf, etc) with the right
And I`m a leftie.
But I'm a righty!
Am right-handed but do random things like a lefty (eat, guitar, golf etc)

I'm right handed for the most part...
I tried looking with my right and it was just weird!

need to work out what the right/left eye to right/left had ratio is!

I'm a bowhunter too which requires you to know which eye is dominate.
oh, and I had to pick up my camera to check
again - interesting topic, thanks for that! =)
Right handed, right eye
Anyway, I'm left-handed, right-eyed.
