Cheapest decent DSLR?

January 23rd, 2011
my birthday is coming up... but my budget is constrained

I'm looking for a camera with more options/settings for hobby photography, especially manual focus

this is what I'm using now:

thoughts, tips?

edit: definitely expecting to get a second-hand/used camera

edit: want to keep it under $500

Can't really suggest much without a budget...

Yeah - I was gonna say. Have you got £10, £100 or £1000

Check out Cameta Camera. They beat Amazon's prices. Have you thought of buying a refurbished camera with a warranty? I am too much of an amateur to suggest any particular model.

When I bought my first camera, I went to the site DPReview. Gave me a ton of insight into the pros and cons of every major camera out there.

canon 500D (whatever the equivalent is in US) - not sure how much in US dollars, but can't be much more?

@eholle Canon's official refurb store is worth checking out, camera comes like new with full warranty, only difference is the price.

I got my Nikon D3000 on sale for less than $500 at TARGET!! The same camera was about $700 at Best Buy on the same day....I got it for $479.00 with the kit lens 18-55mm. Check for sales!! You CAN get a new camera with a little research and patience :)

Canon Rebel XS are around $500 (some places less, see Amazon)

The Nikon D3000 is what I use and it can be found at a fairly reasonable price. It's a great DSLR for amateur photography. Good luck in your search.

Canon XS or XSi...
Canon doesn't have as many cheaper SLRs as Nikon but the little bit of extra money is SO worth the quality...

Nikon D5000 is around $500 and I think it's phenomenal!!! An excellent beginner model.

Nikon is going to win here because they have newer models at cheaper price points than Canon. Unless you get a 2-3 year old Canon DSLR or an older/used/refurbished 40D, XSi, etc.

I think that's smart since once people buy a cheaper Nikon body, they'll probably stick to Nikon glass forever - not too many people ever sell everything and switch to Canon, unless they have have patience to sell everything and have money to buy a new system.

So be sure you want to buy a Nikon, because it'll be a hassle later on if you decide you wanted a Canon in the first place.
