I go with nikon. i have taken my cameras into conditions that... void their warranty to say the least. i have tried canon systems, and they just don't seem to hold up. they are good cameras, i am not saying they aren't (unless its one or two of my friends that i bash cameras with at any chance to the point we are screaming insults for the fun of watching strangers around us baffled by our actions) but my nikons have held up to literally rain, snow, floods, sleet, and fire, including inside houses on fire, and i just can't say that the canon systems have held up for me. i would love to get back into my hasselblads, and perhaps i will again one day.
I've had kind-of the opposite experience to Chris - several of Nikon cameras (and lenses) had problems, but none of my Canon gear has. I'm employed as a police photographer and I also have my own business shooting portraits and weddings. I regularly shoot in adverse conditions such as tropical downpours, extreme heat, and contaminated environments (arson scenes, road traffic accidents, aircraft crashes, boat crashes, industrial and mining accidents etc). I've never lost any Canon kit due to those conditions, but I have lost Nikon gear. Now, I don't think it has anything to do with one being better than the other - I know people who have had experiences that match what Chris described.
So, most of my gear is Canon. I also have Mamiya medium format, and I occassionaly hire Hasselblad medium format digital when I have the need. I've owned Leica, Olympus, and Minolta as well, but Leica was the only one of the three with which I was completely satisfied - if it wasn't so expensive, I'd certainly look at Leica again. And like Chris, I'd happily invest in 'Blad if I could see decent returns for my investment - something that's on the cards maybe in a year or two. Phase One also has a great product that's nice to use, but I prefer the 'Blad.
My SLR is a Nikon, I loved it the moment I held it.
But my P&S is a Canon...then again, I did buy it years and years ago before I knew anything about photography, but it works fine for me!
I'm new to this whole thing, so I took advice from a friend who is a professional photographer and purchased a Sony dslr. Apparently that's all she uses and she thinks they're the bees knees. At this point, I've no complaints... but I wouldn't necessarily know what to complain about, either! ;)
