Sometimes when I am wanting to take an action shot, the action/sports setting is too dark and the camera wont let me use flash....what else can I do to get an action picture that isn't dark?

thanks :)

Hi Della,
What I really like to do when using a point and shoot camera, which I still often do, is using a normal camera and simply track the subject. It will create an excellent motion effect, and if you are a bit lucky and practised, your subject will still be sharp and crisp. Best works if you first start tracking the subject in the viewfinder, and once you have the motion going to snap the shot.

thank you raymond for the advice....I think I have tried it that way before--unaware that I was doing it "right"---will keep practicing :) thanks so much

Hi Della,
In my experience, lighting is everything when shooting action sports such as soccer or basketball. I always shoot without the flash because I don't want it to bother the players. I have tried several different cameras when my child was playing sports and found that the best camera was a Digital SLR with a telephoto lens. With a non-SLR digital camera, it's a challenge especially when shooting indoors in Sports and Burst Mode (5 to 10 shots per second). The more light, the less blurry your shots will be. In high school and college games, you should have no problem using an SLR but with professional sports, many arenas have rules that prevent you from bringing in a Digital SLR or so called professional camera.

The telephoto lens is a good option. I tend to use manual as the sports mode doesn't quite cut it ... I set my camera up with ISO 1600 and around F4 or F5.6 (My lens won't go any lower!) - Shutter speed is usually around 1/4000.
If your camera has a AF mode,, then set that to AI Servo and also set the camera so it takes multiple shots not singular.

I'm yet to try indoor sports photos, but the above works for outdoors!
