I'm planning on purchasing a new camera and can't decide between the Canon Powershot s95 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5.
I am not an extremely experienced photographer, although I have been taking pictures for a while and am interested in a camera that I can learn with but also has a good auto setting for those days when I don't have time to be fancy :)
I travel quite a bit, usually backpacking or on bus, so I am looking for something compact. I take mainly pictures of people and scenery, as well as a good amount of videos (mainly interviews and events).
Please give me your suggestions!! I have been reading the debates all over the internet, but it's so hard to tell the important differences between the two. Does anyone use either of the two for their 365proj? Thank you! :)
I take my Canon A530 with me when I can't take my DSLR. I LOVE it! I realize it's not the same model but the Canon name has a great reputation so if I had to choose I'd always go with Canon.
Thanks! I've definitely heard many wonderful things about Canon... but then, the panasonic has the leica lens.... haha so torn!
I'm looking to spend a little more than the A530, although I do love your pictures... are those with your DSLR?
Both great cameras, but the S95 is definitely more stealth. I have a Panasonic GF1 for my P&S and really wished I had an S95 when I went skiing last weekend. The LX5 would have even been much better. If compactness is important, then I'd lean to the Canon. If not, then maybe open up you options to the Canon G12 and Nikon P7000. Too many choices I know. Good luck!
My wife uses both Canon S90 and Lumix LX3. I prefer the Lumix, but the S90 is also very good. If I have to choose between S95 and LX5, I will go for the LX.
I have a Nikon D300s with an assortment of lenses and was in the market for a compact P&S. This Christmas I purchased the LX5 and took it with me on vacation. Luckily the local camera store gave me 7 days to decide. LOVED the quality of the shots I took but I just couldnt fit it comfortably in my pocket. After reading a TON of reviews, I noticed the S95 was "neck and neck" with the LX5. I took it back and bought the S95. I havent looked back since. I really feel these two cameras are so close...it comes down to software likes and dislikes, size, etc. I chose to go with the S95 because of its size....you just cant beat a camera with this kind of IQ that you can fit in your pocket (jeans pocket...not just a jacket pocket). For me, if I am willing to take a bigger camera along....its going to be the DLSR.
Couple of advantages the S95 has over the LX5:
1) Stereo inputs for video recording....noticed a difference here for sure!
2) Ring function - allows you to control various functions from a ring on the front of the camera...very handy!
3) Easier menu navigation (IMHO)

@loni526 I have been using a Panasonic TZ6 compact camera for my 365 and I am very happy with it. It has many different manual settings as well as the auto. An artist friend always raves about the leica lens too. You could check out my pics if you like to see what the Panasonic can do. I'm only a beginner though!
I have a Canon Rebel and wanted a smaller camera. I did a lot of research and was deciding between almost the same cameras. I ended up getting the Lumix LX5. I love it! The manual features are great, and the automatic mode works really well too. I don't think you can make a bad decision, since I think both cameras are good.
My DSLR is a canon but my p&s is a Lumix. I love them both. I've never had a canon p&s but I've had a nikon and fuji p&s and swear by my Lumix over them. Sorry not much help here.
