Do you have a photography website?

February 5th, 2011
Hi all, I currently have my photos featured on an iPage website. I'm not happy with the limited functionality and template layouts they give you to work with. It's not really geared towards showcasing photography. I'm looking for recommendations you can provide on experience you've had with elegant layouts, easily editable and relatively inexpensive costing websites. I've looked into livebooks, qufoto and clickbooq so far. Livebooks is more than I'd like to spend per month. Qufoto is the most attractive to me at this point (for a variety of reasons, but one being the month to month plan) - can any of you offer reviews of using them to host your work?

My ideal website would be a mix of the following: space for large images to (almost) fill the page, simple, streamlined layouts, easy to customize, responsive customer service and effective search engine optimization.

I appreciate any and all advice you can offer!
Thanks in advance,
Naomi

I have a blog with Google's blogspot.com. I like that it has so many customizable features and such a user friendly interface, and the photo uploader is like a dream. It shows the photos at about 3 and a half inches wide within the blog posts, but you can click on any pic to view it full-screen.

I have a photography website with Photoshelter. They are beyond amazing, but it costs $30 a month for their plan. http://www.jasonbarnettephotography.com

However, I would recommend Wordpress. If you use Wordpress.com, which is free, you have several themes to choose from, you can customize a pretty good deal, and it's very easy to showcase your photos. Of course, showcasing your photos in this manner is more like writing stories with photos rather than just galleries, but I still recommend it. I use Wordpress.org which costs me $35 a month, which I think is the best plan, at http://blog.jasonbarnettephotography.com

If all else fails, Flickr and Facebook Pages are good ways to get your photography out there as well.

I strongly recommend against Wix. Although it has a free option, it is completely Flash-based which means Google searches will never find your photos.

Try "Visual Light Box" for displaying photos on the web...

That's what I use on the "Gallery" page of my site - http://www.manek.org.uk/gallery :)

I have one through smugmug... feel free to check out my site and see if its something you're interested in. I'm just starting out, and haven't had any experience with other places / host sites, so I can't offer any comparisons. I am quite happy with them though, and cost is pretty good.
