If you are on a budget (like me) then I would start with a 50mm. They have a f/1.8 for ~$120 or an f/1.4 USM for ~$380. I have the 1.4 and LOVE it! Here is why:
1- amazing depth of field. too much for some shots, but loads of fun.
2- fixed lens makes you get up and move around which bolsters creativity
3- great in low-light situations
4- equivalent to an 80mm on a cropped sensor, which is great for portraits.

For macro, the 100mm canon macro is the way to go. I don't have it yet, but it will be my next lens. Look at amazon .com for a lot of users samples of these lenses.

Ditto on the 50mm lens, it is great to have for portraits against a soft and fuzzy background. Does wonderful bokeh too.

A macro lens is a great purchase though if too expensive you could try some macro filters or extension tubes or backwards mounted lens to get started. It won't give you the same results as a real macro but they are a fun way to get started. Still saving for a macro of my own...

I have a Nikon, but.... Tamron make a 90mm macro 1:1 for both cannon and Nikon. Its called the Portrait Macro. You get the full functionality of true macro, but the focal length is great for portraits as well. I had both an 18-55 and a 55-200 mm lens and wanted something that would compliment what I already had. Whilst the auto focus can sometime take longer than some to search, the end result is always crisp and sharp. The price isn't too bad either especially for a true macro. I'm in Australia and was able to get it for $550. Everything is more expensive here, so if you're OS, then its probably much cheaper.

I hope this helps with your decision.

I'm also putting a word in for the 50mm. I have the f/1.4 and rarely take it off my camera.

I Agree with others- 50 mm lens is way to go.
