I find it interesting how even when I have a picture in my mind about how I want something to turn out, some of my favorite photos end up being those where something unexpected occurred or where something was caught right at a perfect, un-recreate-able moment. Do you have a favorite "unexpected" picture?
I took this one today. I was only worrying about getting the eye in focus, and the effect was not at all what I anticipated. I'm still not a hundred percent sure how it happened (i.e. did I manage to shake in time with his head, essentially panning the rest of the scene?).
I was trying to get a closeup of my son's beautiful blue eye but instead got the color of the sunset reflecting in it! I did the selective coloring because I wanted to keep the attention on that amazing golden sunset color.
I didn't even know I took this picture until it came up on my computer. I was teasing my kids and playing with their feet, when all of a sudden, my son turned on me. I have never seen this look on his face. I just love it, even with my foot in the shot!
I was taking a picture of my little guy playing in the fountains and happened to have caught this moment where the water was about to return to the ground...thought it turned out pretty cool.
most of my pictures are posed, but this one was purely luck:
my mom and i were driving out to the gas station, and when we passed the lake, i happened to notice this guy on a bit of ice. i made my mom pull over and snapped this shot before we continued on our way.
Today's. I had a sort of melancholy, quiet, lonely image of the horses in my mind, but it's so difficult to produce anything truly intentional with a carousel in motion + iphone! This shot, however, almost SOOC (taken through PictureShow app), managed to capture the exact feel I wanted. Very unexpected!
I was outside my house looking for something to take a photo of, I heard the crows squawking, and was just attempting to get one of the birds in flight when I captured this.
i wasn't even looking at the shots on the camera after i took them, like i always do. i just wanted a few simple shots for my grandma so that she could show her friend that lives in California how much snow we got....I was excited and surprised to see how well this turned out, just by chance!
SOOC :)
I was just trying to get a cute pic of the puppy. He moves around so much, he's so active... and I was moving all around trying to get a cute picture. I ended up putting the camera in sports mode so it would just click and click and click... I never expected to love this shot, but he looks so moody and his shadow was silhouetted so nicely. Pure accident. But I love it!
No flash photography was allowed while the skaters were out on the ice, so I wasn't sure what I'd end up with. I was so excited when I saw how beautiful Sasha Cohen came out here, especially with the lighting.
It's made with the kit lens. When I saw the reflections I said "wow". I didn't expect too much because of the light conditions...
Is not perfect, but for me with my 3 months of experience is good. (I started in November 2010 when I bought the D90)
@erikadee My kids love sushi too! My 10 month old boy can happily eat 8 mini rolls in a sitting. It makes such a mess over his pram when he eats it though.
This was just a happy snap, but it turned out surprisingly well.
These two birds were very close to one another when I first saw them and I liked the contrast between them. But when I got my camera out, the black bird started running away. The shot ended up totally different than I intended but I like it anyhow :)
Definitely this one... i was just wandering/ambling down to the harbour to take a snap of the sky (this was after a more than a few Ciders on Australia Day), and this couple were sitting side by side... just as i raised my camera he leant over and kissed her with such passion... but it lasted only a moment. I feel so lucky to have captured it.
I just love unexpected success! I actually really like how this one came out. I was trying for something completely different, but I had the wrong shutter speed (way wrong). When I heard it and realized my mistake I just turned the camera away in annoyance. I love the accidental result!
It's not my favorite, but this shot was also very unexpected:
I was taking pictures of the ridges of the snow, when a bird flew into the frame. I pressed the shutter as fast as I could to capture this. The bird really added to the shot and the mood I was trying to capture.
In this picture I was just trying to get a good angle for the railroad bridge but when I put my head down close to the tracks I could see that there was a reflection of the bridge on the tracks. I didn't put it there, it's a well used track and when you get right down there it is quite shiny! I had no idea until I got down there. I've also tried to recreate this shot but it has never come out quite this good. I absolutely love this one and it is hanging in several people's homes along with a gallery at a local library.
I got my settings wrong for this. I meant to have a longer shutter speed and narrower f numbers but went the other way and forgot to set up. Meaning the lights look like a ghost of a bus, lol.
I know this looks staged, but it's really not...it's why it's so funny. I stood up and she put her paw on the computer so I grabbed my camera quickly and snapped! My son stood on the other side of the computer to get her to look at it instead of me, but it was still pretty natural :)
I was bored as we were driving through the city so I grabbed my camera started playing with blurred light motion. I took thisas we drove by a large car sales lot and kind of liked the end result.

i just thought it was going to be a watch...but the dof came out better than i thought
it'd be this one for me on my recent trip to India. Taken at Varanasi, I spotted this on the steps of the Ghats, perfect lighting and simple subject
